Full Version: Request for a Development Blog for Linux

Hi, well, since Skype 2.5 Beta for windows just hit the news, and they're getting yet more features, whilst version 1.2 for linux is still languishing without ALSA support and featuring some other sound related bugs (device not getting closed), I figure there are going to be a lot of negative threads showing up (either that or people are just plain tired). Either way, since I'm still trying to find a useful and productive way to make progress, I'd like to make a request.

Since we're told that Skype for Linux development is still on-going, and since we're told that it isn't Skype's fault but a third party's, and since we're told that Nils has taken over as product manager and is hoping to help get the linux community back on side, perhaps this could help everybody. Start a development blog. Every couple of days tell the public what progress you're making. If you're spending money on Skype for linux there must be developers around, and if they're not able to develop skype for linux because of a third party supplier (who shall remain nameless) then they must have time on their hands which they could spend a tiny amount of giving a few words to the public. There is already a developer blog set up, so the logistics of such a system have already been taken care of.

I'm certain there will be things to say and bugs being fixed to report back to the public, since there is apparently a closed beta that's been testing for at least 3 months now. Even if it's simply to put pressure on the nameless codec company by informing us that the developers themselves are still waiting for them to reply. It would help open the process, it wouldn't have to name the partner causing delays, it would keep the community onside, or at least show commitment to the community, it would be higher visibility than these forums where you've got to go digging to find the last time a skype developer said something, and it could be vetted by skype itself to avoid breaking any information that the NDAs are designed to stop the beta testers from telling.

If skype is unable to provide a beta product because it's in closed testing, at the very least give us an information feed so that those left waiting are not frustrated, vexed, disgruntled or angered by the repeated release of newer versions for different operating systems, whilst we're still waiting for bugs that we pointed out almost two years ago to be fixed (http://forum.skype.com/viewtopic.php?t=4026).

It was known back then that OSS was being deprecated. The API/Dbus support is also out of date, so all these linux developers can't give their time to come up with new or interesting tools for Skype to roll into their product, because it would need an ancient version of Dbus to work. This could easily be fixed using the current codebase, without ALSA implementation and without delay caused by the third party, but it hasn't been yet. Now, I'm sure there are reasons, but they're not being made clear to us, and we're leaving skype behind because of it. With over 100 million users now, I'd very much like to know the statistics on how many of those use linux, and what the recent trends look like.

If there's a department dedicated to Skype for Linux work, and we've got our very own project manager, then please show us how you're spending your time to help us!

I second that! We need proper info on development progress!

I think there is no such thing as progress... is it?

To be honest i think that skype for linux is DEAD.

You only need to look at the changelog.
CODE
21.03.2006 Skype for Linux 1.2.0.18 (Debian only)

   * bugfix: This hotfix release fixes the broken dependencies that affected the installation of Skype for Linux on a number of distributions including Ubuntu Breezy and Debian Etch.

09.01.2006 Skype for Linux 1.2.0.21 (Mandriva only)

   * bugfix: RPM packaging issues that were preventing proper installations

25.10.2005 Skype for Linux version 1.2.0.18

   * bugfix: fixed a bug in networking code that made Skype vulnerable to remotely induced crash (Skype Security Bulletin SKYPE-SB/2005-003)

As you can see all that has been done since 1.2.0.18 is fixed broken deps and proper package for mandriva.

You can't see ANY sign of ongoing development.
I haven't heard any thing from the skype developers about linux.
We have not even decent sound yet.
Lets face it we linux users doesn't mean sh*t for skype.

If my accusations is wrong, then please make an official statement about current status for linux.

Sorry that my post may have an angry tone in it, but i'm realy angry because i don't like the ongoing process of the linux client lack of development.

Trust me when I say I understand your frustration... We need more hands on deck to help us out, and speed things up. See:

1. http://jobs.skype.com/2006/04/project_mana..._and_linux.html
2. http://jobs.skype.com/2006/03/linux_ui_developer.html
3. http://jobs.skype.com/2006/03/tester_linux...ktop_skype.html

So the development is not dead, but it is lacking resources.

For now, you can read more about Skype for Linux development on: http://nodalpoint.madfire.net/articles/cat...egory/skype_dev . This is where Berkus, a Skype for Linux UI developers post his thoughts and ideas. Don't spam him with questions though please - every hour of his time is valuable...

Nils and Berkus, thank you for your replies. It's excellent to finally see the thought processes and areas being attacker by a skype for linux developer. It appears we must have been thinking along similar lines since the skype related posts only started turning up a week ago! 5:)

I hope it's not considered rude of me to ask whether the other Skype for Linux developers will be able to post there, or more disturbingly, if there are other Skype for Linux developers? Terminus perhaps, or ppmotskula?

I'd also like to apologize, since I'd thought that Nils was the current Linux Program Manager but Skype appears to be hiring for the job. If there's no one in that role then does that mean that Skype for linux is without a project manager or driving force behind it at the moment?

It's a shame that you're so under resourced, and I wish there were something I could do to help (sadly I'm not really a linux developer and Tallinn isn't somewhere I'd like to move to). Will there be announcements once the positions have been filled?

I realise I've just raised a lot more questions, and I'm very greatful for your initial reponse alone, I'd just very much like to see skype progress since I think the underlying technology and sound quality shouldn't be hindered because of development delays. As ever I look forward to the open beta testing, and if there's any other way that I can help please let me know...

terminus and ppmotskula are both fans of Linux and ppmotskula is also using Linux daily, but neither of us is unfortunately a developer.
