Is it just me or does Skype just completely not work on kernel 2.6.16 and UDEV 087? Skype starts up fine, throws no error messages, but no audio in or out when a session is started.

If I'm wrong, I'd love to know, because this pretty much means the end of Skype on Linux if that's the case.

I'm on kernel 2.6.16.11 with udev 0.091-1 and it works fine (well as fine as it ever has).

I have the same problem.
No sound only in Skype on my Debian with 2.6.16

After back to 2.6.15.6, work it again.

what distributions are you guys running on?

Gentoo 2006.0, kernel 2.6.16 with CK sources, UDEV 087, Alsa build as modules from the kernel.
xboxrulz_
ok, since it is Gentoo, you might want to recompile your kernel (Gentoo default is recommended or vanilla) since it works with Fedora Core 5 (2.6.16 kernel update)

Twinkle works perfectly with such a setup.
Let's face the fact. Skype for Linux IS dead.
jbdubbs_
Well, the CK kernels don't modify any sound portion of the kernel and they've worked on every other kernel version, although I'll give it a shot for the hell of it.

If I was working with Linux only, that would be fine, however I have people on Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX that I need to communicate with. I've gotten along with aMSN for a while, but that is not a great solution. OpenWengo is also no help as it fails to work much of the time.

Well, Twinkle can work with any SIP providers. Have your friends download the windows and mac client from gizmoproject.com.

Then, configure Twinkle to work with gizmoproject.com and you can talk to anyone. In fact, SIP providers make it very easy to set up an ATA connected to your router, so that you don't even need to have the computer on in order to talk to anyone.

Update:

Recompiled kernel without alsa support, threw in the alsa-driver package in gentoo's portage, rearranged my /etc/modules.d/alsa configuration and voila. Working skype.

Turns out I was doing a few things wrong.
