Call prices seemto be about half the price of skype, so for heavy skype out users like me thats important. Anyone got views on the pluses and minuses of wengo ??

it's old story skype is expensive compared to SIP-providers

try any SIP-softphone.
just wengo is a poor choice cause support for multiple providers & free choice of provider is bad/nonexistent.

look e.g.:
http://www.twinklephone.com http://groups.yahoo.com/group/twinklephone/
http://ekiga.org/

Budget Phone (Dutch)
Free World Dialup
Sipgate
SIPphone
VoIP User
Vonage (special setting needed, see below)
Vbuzzer (special setting needed, see below)
Wengo (French)
XS4ALL (Dutch)
(from http://www.xs4all.nl/~mfnboer/twinkle/providers.html)

wikipedia.org SIP

sipgate for instance provides FREE "skype-in"-type landline number. didn't check the other providers, so you have to choose yourself wink.png try to sign with a provider located in destination country of your international calls, you have a virtual bureau there whereever you like...

I have been extremely happy with gizmoproject.com. They use the open SIP protocol, have great forums and allow you to use their client or bring your own.

I have tested both Twinkle and Ekiga clients for linux and they both work with gizmoproject. Twinkle works particularly well and is very fast and easy to set up.

I left Skype behind once it became clear that they had zero interest in Linux users and wanted to create a proprietary world where you can only talk to other people who are on Skype. sadsmile.png

Don't allow them to do to VoIP what Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL did to IM. You should be able to talk to anyone no matter which client you use, just like you can currently do with email.

I'm also in search for an alternative. Skype for Linux is not an option with this software quality.
Are these support NAT-ed clients?

And how does openwengo compare to skype ?

openwengo = SIP
twinkle = SIP
ekiga = SIP

skype =skype

SIP | SIP -> can_talk
skype | SIP -> can't talk

Skype [compare to] SIP -> SIP more cheap, more free, more standard, more clients

openwengo [compare to] other_SIP_clients -> see above postings

any questions? :wink:

twinkle does STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP thru NAT).
almost all SIP clients do. see:
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3489.txt
though SIP with STUN works great with the very most router-NATs, it is no way to trick the real hard firewall you may find in companies, universities aso. many people think this is ok and the way it should be. if the admin of your local network wants to allow VoIP, he will set up firewall acordingly. ask him, he will be happy to help you avoid using skype.
