Hello all,

A cursory search revealed no other posts on this topic...

Just wanted to let any know you was thinking about the very nice Plantronics Pulsar 590 headset for use with Skype... Don't bother! The BT Headset service IS NOT SUPPORTED (i.e., DOESN'T WORK).

They are very nice wireless headphones for music, and perhaps, for cellular phone usage (which I have no desire to test). Ooh, wireless stereo headphones! Drool! However, the only reason I bought the damn things was for bluetooth Skype (and light music listening). Very frustrated I am! I guess I will have to get a different wireless headset. ARRRG.

Took a while, but when I got my Plantronics 590 working on Skype, my Nokia headsets HS-7W and HS-11W work beautifully as well
gdssxm_
What did you do to get it to work? I did live chat with the Plantronics tech support and he said that it doesn't support the headset profile, and that they only sold one BT headset that did...

I never talked to Plantronics. Over a year ago, toying with Nokia and PCi headsets, I removed MS’s Bluetooth driver from Bluetooth Devices under Device Manager and installed Widcomm driver that was part of IBM Integrated Bluetooth s/w. This worked intermittently, but after a while it ceased to function. Then recently I read about having to rename MS’s btw*.inf and another btw*.* (the wildcards here are my own as I can’t remember the original names and method to dig them out of probably a compressed file and I can’t find that article again) so that Windows could not put them back. I installed the software for 590; pair with my notebook (Code 0000); restarted the system and after a few attempts it worked. You may have to press the phone symbol on the 590 to get connected. Now my older headsets work with phones and Skype too. I try not to confuse the setup by synching the phones with my notebook via Bluetooth (use IR instead).

Guys, you must be kidding, this is the best bluetooth headset ever! Everything just works, you must be doing something wrong.

I agree with Pavelponomaryov to the extend that the 560 is the best Bluetooth headset ever for Skype and music listening. It is a wonderful device if you know how to config the S/w or that all components of your system is just happened to be right for Skype. But otherwise I suspect that there is more to it than that. It appeared that Plantronics decided it was not worth the resources needed to provide technical support for using 560 as a headset. Windows XP Pro SP2 Control Panel “Sound and Audio Devices” is not fully compatible in that it can’t handle the recording volume and playback calibration correctly. The microphone advance function is grayed out. The Speech recognition part dialog said “The microphone you are using does not support gain adjustment”. The headset doesn’t consistently automatically switches between talking to cell phone and to PC internal speaker and mike. Different PC applications needed to be adjusted in different ways for headset speaker and mike. The volume control works differently with different combination of devices. If you have more than one headset care is required when changing headset and what devices you are talking to. Please share your wisdom.

I will try to get it working again.

Hoever, I do not have a Widcomm dongle but instead have a BlueSoleil one with the "required for skype" VoIP driver set. The Microsoft BT driver seems to be automatically disabled (does not appear in Device Manager).

The headset will pair just fine and will activate the A/V profile ok too, so I can hear music, DVDs, even the British lady on the Skype Test Call (I just can't leave a message).

When I try to activate the Headset profile with the BlueSoleil driver and the 590 headset, it says something like "Headset service failed to start, service unavailable"...

That's where I am right now.

I chatted with Plantronics for some possible assistance and he told me categorically that the headset was NOT supported in skype and the headset profile was not available, and that I could only use it for a BT cellular, and then of course refered me to the $300 headset that is supported in skype. Oh well.

What BT tranceiver do you use? Are you connecting to a computer or a mobile?

My Plantronics Pulsar P590 works with poth A2DP and Headset profiles just fine. It works with my Sony Ericsson mobile and with BT USB dongle. If you have any problems then maybe:

1. Your headset is broken
2. You do not know how to configure your BT settings

My Plantronics 590 talks directly to my Thinkpad X40 which has built in Bluetooth, and also with my Nokia phones

If anyone has been able to get the 590a to work with either Toshiba BT or Bluesoleil BT, please let me know!

I have tried both, and have been only partially successful.

Toshiba:

BT will pair with the device as EITHER audio sink, OR headset, but once it is paired with one, even if I disconnect it will NOT recognize the other service, so I have to actually delete one, then re-discover the other. That is a bit of a pain in the @ss...

Bluesoleil:

BT seems to only recognize the Bluetooth AV service, and the Headset service is not recognized at all. Therefore, I can use the 590a to HEAR in stereo sound, but cannot use the mic (therefore pretty useless for Skype).

If anyone has any success with either of these bluetooth stacks please please pleas send me a PM or post more detail on how you were able to get it to work!

Thanks,
Icarus

I have the same problem with the Bluesoleil software - even the latest VoIP version

The Widcomm dongle i tried didn't work either - intermittent sound from earpiece (sounded like it was buffering issue)... and there was no luck with skype on the test call

If there is any advice on a specific dongle for this headset, that would be appreciated (given the issue appears to be s/w & set-up related)

Here's how I got it to work.

I learned that there are different bluetooth chipsets. I was unable to get my IBM T42P internal bluetooth to recognize any of the services available on the headset (microphone or audio).

I purchased a new USB 2.0 device which explicitly states it has "Bluetooth Profile Support" for "HEADSET".

Once I installed the drivers for this USB dongle and the software that accompanied it, Blue Soleil, it discovered the services and it is now working flawlessly with Skype and Cisco IP Communicator.

I bought the Pulsar 590 for quite the same reason as the OP. I am using a MA-730 bluetooth dongle. I had some problems initially with Skype, but it seems each time i connect with my pc i get a different result. How MA software setup is when i go to connect to my hedset(after pairing) it asks me if a want to connect mono(mic works) or stereo (no mic). So it isn't too much of a hassle for me.

What I am experiencing is when i have it connected in stereo and I have music playing the sound hiccups. It's like the transmission gets interrupted for like a second and comes back on. I have a tickey open with plantronics to see what can be done to fix it, if anything. I've installed the latest drivers for the MA device directly from the MA site. I'm not sure what to do.

My big concern was using it for VoIP, but that seems to be okay.

It should be noted that I only tested it once by calling my cousins cell phone. He said I came in clear, and that I sounded like I was on a speakerphone(mostly because it was picking up background noises. ) The big test will come when I use the headset to call internationaly.

I have the Plantronics P590 headset. When I successfully pair with my PC, In BlueSoleil it only seems to allow me to use the AV Service not the Headset Service. Any advice on how to solve this problem since people claim in this forum that I should be able to use the Plantronics P590 headset with Skype?

Bump.... I will push this thread back to top, it seems it's like 2 years old. Anyway..

What am I using:

Yes, I have paired Plantronics 590 with my laptop successfully. I am using both Bluesoleil and Toshiba Stack. The reason that I use both of them is none supports all. Blusoleil doesn't see my internal bluetooth card, only USB external stick. That might be different in your case... Bluesoleil works splendidly with any paired Audio devices you have. I have tested so far a couple of headphones and they work great. Not so Toshiba Stack or Widcomm. Bluisoleil designed the software pretty well. However, Blusoleil is not good with core hardware support. Like internal cards or bluetooth FAX modems etc. And this is where Toshiba Stack comes in. Toshiba comes from industrial background. Toshiba stack powers all industrial devices in distribution, fork lifts computers etc. These guys do the really serious stuff, not toys like Bluesoleil or Widcom. But Toshiba doesn't work with all that fancy consumer stuff we have nowadays.

Not sure whether Widcomm (the 3rd known bluetooth hardware support software) was an independent company and acquired by Broadcom, the telecommunications equipment maker. Widcom was good in the past, now they slipped behind. I think they more focus on support devices that contain Broadcom chips.

So Bluesoleil is an undisputed leader in it's own niche field.

What do I recommend to use:

I recommend using Bluesoleil for any Audio devices.

How to connect Plantronics 590:

Enough talk, here is how I have paired Plantronics 590 with Bluesoleil:

I presume you are running Bluesoleil 6.x. Open the Blusoleil desktop. Now turn the headphones off (witch off). Turn them back on AND at the SAME time press the "phone" button. Now there will be 2 fast blue flashes and afterwards it starts flash red. Go back to your computer. Now click there on "Search devices". Soon it will add you headphones. Now double click on the headphones icon. You get inside and you should see the Headphone device (A2DP) AND the Headset Microhone Device (normal bluetooth). These are 2 separate devices for you!

If you want Skype, you go and double click on the Microphone device. Now the message will appear and the Mic will get little bit greenish. You should check the Playback/Recording devices in Windows (from Control Panel or the Task Bar, if you have the speakerphone icon there) to check whether 1) the device has been loaded AND whether it is your active device. (Check this both for the recording device and playback device).

Try Skype now.

If this works, try some music. If you want to listen to music now, you have to go back to Bluesoleil Desktop, into Plantronics "folder", right click on the Mirophone and DISCONNECT the Mic Device. Then you right click on the Headphone device and TURN ON the Headphone Device. .... Are you following me? ... You are doing this not in Bluetooth Plances (Don't do anything to Plantronics itself. Don't unpair your Plantronics)... If this was successful you should see the Headphone Devices go green. Now go to your Playback devices in Windows (Control Panel or click on speakerphone icon in task bar) and check whether Platronics Headphone is now 1)loaded and 2) your actice device.

Now the Stereo Headphones should work.

If you are going to do Skype you have to do again this process! Turn off Stereo headphones and Turn on Microphone!

Why is this all so complicated:

Because Plantronics doesn't initegrate with your laptop the same way is for example Nokia's headphone would integrate with Nokia cell, or Motorolla Headphone with Motorolla cell. Altought Cell phone manufacturers did a very good job in trying to standardize and support all different technologies, it's not the case with laptops and PCs.

There are 2 protocols that are not the same. One is simpler one but supports things like voice recording, commands, phone book transfers, data transfer etc... The other protocol is the newer one, supports stereo, for instance and runs faster and is designed for things like listening to music etc. Most consumer devices support new protocol. Older devices, including all industrial devices like scanners support the older protocol.

Some headphones that have hardware support don't have a problem with swiwtching the 2 protocols and will change over without need to do it manually in Bluesoleil.

Because of this the protocols need to be turn on and off for different use. And this is the reason why some other software like Toshiba Stack or Widcomm suport some devices, some only partially or don't support at all.

Bluesoleil makes it easy to switch between profiles, it's not so easy with Widcomm and Toshiba Stack.

I am not an expert on this, most of this is from my practical expertise with BT so please don't get me wrong for some wrong used lingo.

Oh YES!! Plantronics 590 headphones rock!! Best stereo bluetooth headphones.

But hope this helps...

Further to this, on the Skype sound settings, microphone needs to be set to MIDI Sco.
