I used AOL IM years ago to talk to people in America and that was on a dial up connection. What makes skype so special?

Well you can voice chat to everyone for free.

Sound quality.

And the fact that you don't have to worry about somebody listening in on your conversation (Skype is almost the only VOIP with encryption).

A 5 way conference which you cannot do with the others.

Sound quality, for one thing. I whistle, and three thousand miles away my buddy's dog runs into the livingroom looking for me.
I've got friends spread across 14 different timezones, but when five of us meet up on a conference call it sounds like we're all sitting in the same room. I've tried ventrillo and teamspeak, but it's the sound quality is the difference between a weak AM radio station and a CD.

for me: voicemail and skype out = PC meets the telephone lines. The ability to ring any other land line phone in the world from my PC for 1p per minute. AIM and Yahoo don't do that.

Agree with sound quality.
We compared the time lag (you know, that satellite broadcast-like quality where your mouth moves before the sound comes in) when using YM and then Skype. We used two computers which were both in the same room; speakers on. Lag was very noticeable with YM. A bit of a lag with Skype but acceptable.
That was a month ago. Don't know if YM quality has changed.
BUT BUT, IM'ng is a lot easier with YM than with Skype. You can't press Tab>Enter to send IM with Skype. You have to grab mouse then click the Return button.

Hmmm. Let me clarify that. In chat setting, I have "enter" assigned to "inserting a line break" instead of "sending chat message." In other IM softwares, you can press Tab>enter to send message. In Skype u can't.
