Hi there, I am using the latest linux skype on ubuntu, and as with all the others - I could not install the .deb, so I have tried a couple of alternatives and ended up with FC3 rpm instead - it works just fine, no sound probs or anything, but it uses almost 100% cpu resources while I am logged on, even when it is idle, this means I can't do anything else while skype is active, which isn't much use, I need it active in the background so I know if I am getting a call (well duh...)
How do I get it to stop chewing up my cpu?
pentium 4 2Ghz
512 MB ram

sorry, I don't experience any sort of lag here. Maybe it was the RPM to DEB conversion. Try just downloading the dynamic tar balls.

I have tried that already, and also tried win-skype(2) with wine (which didn't work) it is not a problem with the rpm-deb process, because the ubuntu skype wiki actually lists that as the way to install skype, and others have done it just fine, please help??

If you notice big CPU load while you have chat windows open, then it might be because of animated emoticons being enabled. If you go to tools->options and disable them, you might notice CPU load to drop like a rock. Disabling emoticon animation is a good idea for laptop users anyway to keep the battery drain minimal...
btw, If you do have this problem ,then the CPU usage is not for skype process, but for Xorg process instead.

I disable the emoticons and i have always a massiv CPU load for 2 min when i start Skype. I have a debian unstable with kernel version: 2.6.15.4 and Skype version: 1.2.0.18_API.

He can type in the command top then hit shift P and it will tell him exactly what process is using all the CPU. I use it to see what is hogging up mine sometimes.
I have no clue on Skype though. I just run Linux on all my rigs.
Hope that helps.

@cobelloy: try the new Debian package, since they were recently fixed. The Ubuntu wiki might be outdated.

Try Ekiga. It supports SIP and works with the SIP-provider of your choice. Much nicer and you are interoperable with the rest of the world, instead of just playing in Skype's fenced garden.
