I suggest that this is a bad idea and will alienate your early adopter/evangelical users

http://slashdot.org/articles/06/02/13/2015236.shtml
I registered this account only because of this posting. I am very upset with Skype! Sell your Intel shares!

I think this is a bad move as well. A lot of users who have a machine with an AMD chip will go to the competition. Yahoo talk is looking good as is voipbuster. But as long as Skype works well for me I'll stick with them, unless their prices don't remain competitive.

Terrible idea. Agree 100% with first post. I've been using and pushing Skype since the early days. And now I use and push AMD, clearly the processor of choice today. When this marketing deal goes into effect AMD will come out ahead in my book. I mean I'll tell my friends to go wtih AMD and screw Skype, use one of the many open SIP alternatives.
And isn't AMD better than Intel at floating point processing, just the sort of math intensive stuff voice codecs require? I may be wrong here, but it just doe't make sense. Boo Skype. BOOOOO!!!!

intel cut a deal with microsoft in '99 to boost the speed of the loader screens for windows 2000 if it ran on a (then) unnecessary p3.
win2k didn't load any faster, just the animation for the load screens moved faster.
intel always does these things, like forcing notebook manufacturers to use the elderly 802.11b wireless chipsets in order to get that cool looking butterfly sticker so you can call your laptop a "centrino"

Crappy idea! Your initially good reputation already lowered a bit when being bought by eBay – don’t ruin it completely!

Sounds deeply anti-competitive and anti-consumer.
Let's all each petition the US FTC and EU Competition Commission, and write to AMD documenting how this has restricted our choice.
Ths is a deeply foolish decision by Skype - they should have just simply hired some competent x86 coders to do it themselves. If they were still a starving startup I could maybe understand.
I am currently shopping for a machine specifically to run Skype. Not impressed.
How many years does this deal run? Does Skype have any statement about whether we can expect any level of support for AMD CPUs, what performance level? Is the current AMD-compatible version going to be downloadable?

Keep it in perspective, this is not just excluding AMD, but also every other Intel user not using the latest Duo chip.

That's right. It's not a slight at AMD users specifically. Just an exclusive promotion, won't be the first won't be the last.
The reaction from the AMD camp is so strong it reminds me of MAC Evangalists getting bent out of shape over PC's being dominant. It isn't that big a deal guys.
