Q: Can I use my computer as a voice gateway between Skype and conventional phone?
A: Yes, you can, suppose you have a good modem inside your PC.

Q: What type of modem do I need?
A: A voice modem. If you don't need realtime duplex voice( such as answering machine,
talkie phone, IVR, etc), any voice modem is OK. If you want a full deplex voice as normal
phone talking, you had better to find a voice modem with speakerphone capability.

Q: How can I know my modem's voice capability?
A: If your modem is not old enough, most probabily it is avoice modem. You can check its voice
capability with some software tools. We recommend VoiveModemTester. You can find it at:
http://www.teleon.homeip.net/support.html

Q: My check shows my modem is a skeaperphone modem, how can my Skype communicates with it?
A: Speakerphone enabled modem has 2 major categories: internal and external.
External type modem has audio sockets on the modem/card for speakerphone, you need to use an
audio cable to connect modem to a sound card on your PC. Your Skype deals with this sound card.
Internal type modem has no audio socket. Its software driver send the voice to the PC's default
wave device and vice versa. Skype send the voice to default audio device, the modem phone line
can get the voice if the modem's speakerphone is activated by TAPI or AT-command.

Q: Can you recommend a modem and the reason?
A: PCTel modem, include PCTel 688 PCI modem, 789 PCI dem, PCTel AMR or CNR modem.
PCTel modem has internal speakerphone function. There is no need to use extra sound card.
PCTel modem is a HSP modem, so it is a cheap and popular. If you cannot find it in your local
shop, you may check it at : www.teleonnetworks.com

Q: I have an internal speakerphone modem and Skype, so that is all?
A: No. Most probabily your modem's speakerphone voice is go via default wave device. It works fine
for phone line with speaker/mic, but not for phone line with Skype. Your need extra efforts to get
rid of heavy echo. You also need to match the specific wave format used by modem. So you need a
special driver.

Q: Is there such a software Skype driver to make voice modem work?
A: Yes. You have many solutions. Teleon Gateway Driver for Skype is one of them, it is free. You can
find it at: www.teleon.net.

Maybe that was true 2 years ago. Now the reality is: after getting a positive cofirmation about the voice modem function using their VoiceModem Tester and installing the free Teleon Gateway driver (all 3 versions A176 Lite, 203, and 204)it always says: "Skype not connected". And, who wonders, a trial version tester is not treated as a potential customer and never gets an answer from them. no.png

I am seeking such an arrangement for Skype, and use it as an all-purpose POT speakerphone modem. Before seeing this topic, I looked at various gateways and ATA's, and other products...and get lost in all the specs and comments. www.teleonnetworks.com link mentioned above does not work. http://www.teleon.net/index.html does work, but their discussion seems focused on developers and ultra-geeks, not someone like me. I found a listing of speaker phone modems at http://www.blackice.com/voicemodems.htm.

Does any one have any suggestions to help me hone in on a solution.

FYI: Ideally, I seek to set up a multi-line desk phone for POT, Skype, and standard codec VoIP services.

I am new to Skype so I may be not understanding what is going on here?

It shows I have two replies to my post, but clicking on "2" only brings up the Skype names of the previous poster's, no content speaking to my questions. Did anyone send a reply? I just amended my email to get any responses immediately.

I now ask also if anyone knows if www.teleonnetworks.com still exists. The web site works, but sending email their sales department brings back a bounced msg. Again, maybe I'm missing something?
