hi, ill get rid of this properitary whole in my system now, always i start skype and close it after a while (x) it wont stop, its running and never stops, i see that if i run it from console, thats really a pain.
after ctrl+c and a restart again, it hangs up, forgets profiles, settings or wont start at all.
so, skype is unuseable. thx. thsts not what we expected from a software like that, should be better programmed, or better make it open source, so potential coders could fix that messi.

Skype doesn't stop running completely just because you quit the GUI, that's how it's supposed to work! It keeps running in the background so its peer-to-peer system can work.
If you want to quit skype completely just exit the GUI, then a simple 'killall skype' will take care of the rest.

There are problems with Skype (e.g. the silly regression introduced in the 1.2 series about not closing dsp, which they won't be bothered to fix), but nothing of what you complain about is real. You're just blattering rubbish.

Even though the original poster's points may have been off, his conclusions are correct. I've wasted hours getting Skype to half-way work on my Mandriva system (where it's supplied in a form that's supposed to work out of the box), and still have to boot up in Windows to get decent sound quality. Why aren't any other companies getting into this market? I really want incoming and outgoing calls with regular phone lines, and I wouldn't mind paying several times as much as Skype charges just to be free of using Windows.

Maybe Google will finally get into this market. Personally, I've been wondering about Skype going downhill ever since the eBay buyout, and the latest games with favoring Intel over AMD just confirm the trend. eBay has the whole monopolistic mindset that treats customers as sheep to be fleeced.

There _are_ sip clients out there, you know. And although I'm a relatively happy skype user (and skypout user) for now, I do keep an eye on what's happening in that camp too. It's worrying, but for Skype things really seem to have stalled after the ebay takeover. For now I choose to be optimistic for a few months more though.
But it's also true that of all the skype installations I have done for colleagues most of them have been hassle free. Although personally I find the older 1.1.0.3 version a better deal than e.g. 1.2.0.18.

I tried SIP using KPhone on OpenSuSE 10 and I thought the quality was horrible. It was awful compared to Skype on the exact same platform.

Well what I've started to believe is that the Skype Staff is ignoring us as much as they can exept for a few members one this forum, and I think it is time to make us Linux users heard. So people out there shout, so the Skype team will see That WE also are their costumers AND user... Though for how long if this ignoring-thing continues?
