Can Skype be run as a daemon or without X? Since my server computer is up all of the time I would like to purchase a USB phone and allow calling from that computer using Skype, but I'd also like to do so without installing and running X.

Is it busines decision or just a technical mishap?
As temporary solution, I can confirm, that current version does run quite well on 1x3 pixel virutual desktop (TightVNC server version 1.2.9) without window manager.
2 lines from my .vncrc :
$vncStartup ="/usr/bin/skype";
$geometry ="1x3";

business decision. and while your geometry hack is legal for your own use, you would be violating the skype
license if you incorporate this into a program that uses the skype API to do something useful.

ppmotskula,
You clearly haven't understood at all what madis_I actually did, from a technical point of view. So may I humbly point out that you're talking out of your backside.

My fault. It's about section 3.2.1 in /usr/share/doc/skype/copyright as I understand.
Is it OK, if we will use big enough virtual screen and provide users with detailed instructions how to access it?
Or is there document describing with more details (and examples) where are limits between nice and naughty API usage from Skype's point of view?
BTW other non-graphical Skype related application I'd like to see is special module for Linux or BSD based NAT router/firewalls. Yes I know skype is very sucessful an NAT traversal, but I really like to make this task easier for my networks.

I guess making the virtual screen big enough and telling users how to access it would be OK. When your solution is about to reach beta, please send it to me too -- I can ask around inside the company.
Unfortunately there is no document except the EULA itself that regulates it, so such bordering cases should be handled one by one.
Regarding the non-graphical Skype client, I can tell you as much that one of my first questions after joining Skype was "Is there a command-line Linux Skype (even for internal use only) that I could play with?" but the answer was "no".

Oh well. I guess I can't shoot the messenger. Thanks for the reply and thank you madis_l for making a suggestion that was rather good.

bring bugfix, tell
what's going on with 2months of beta - and maybe we will read the licence. orphan projects are adopted easily by community
decide: is skype-linux
commercial, or is it
obsolete. then
behave acordingly.
