Full Version: Suse 9.2 problems with skype

Hi,

I've just installed skype for Linux.

Problems:
- I cannot make any calls
- I cannot accept any calls
- There is no error message indicating what's going wrong

Closer description:
I can see online users, they can see me. I can see when I am called (but the green button does not work then), my outgoing calls do not work (not even ringing). When I try to call, it says "connecting",... and stays in that stage... I can only exit by killing the process.
Text-messages cannot be sent.

OS is Suse Linux 9.2; tried both applicable versions of Skype: rpm for Suse 9.0 or higher and the static binary version.

With WinXP *! on the same machine&network !* Skype works great. But I have to use Linux currently.

Has anybody experienced similar problems? Suggestions how to fix it?

Thanks,
Michael

Check to see if you have another audio app running such as Kaffeine or Amarok. Very likely they are blocking access to your sound device.

(Funny enough though this appears only to affect certain hardware)

Also check that your mic is ok by testing a recording app such as KRecord (if that doesn't work, neither will Skype)

BTW for me, Skype is fine on both SuSE9.3 and Mandriva10 - although sometimes texting is silent

You will probably be able to find a great deal of useful information on the link discussing Suse 10 and the problem with no sound...

The distribution did change quite a bit from 9.3 to 10.0, but not nearly enough to prevent regarding another release's documentation and online q&as from being useful.

After turning off Amarok it works. I did not recognize this problem as sound problem (no error message, just deadlock), so this was a great hint for me.

Thanks a lot !! smile.png

Turning off Amarok was already the solution for me. But thanks for the hint, I will take a look at it when running into problems again.
