I am really confused with all the skype options.

I am a mexican studying in the US and I want to get a skype phone to be in contact with my family without the computer. I don't know if I should just get a skypephone or a skype number (skype to go?).

I haven't bought a cell phone yet, cause I don't know what is best. If a cheap nokia that allows skype, or a blackberry that is much more expensive. I don't make many calls in the US, I don't know that much people, but I need a local phone for the college needs.

I know I'd like to receive from mexico: skype calls, land calls + be able to call mexico skype and landlines.
So I don't know if I should get 2 skype numers, one for each country or what to do. I also have available the gooogle number unactivated yet.

Users, Help me decide/understand the best combination

Thanks.

Basically, a Skype-To-Go number is the best option if:
- You have a cell phone with a free minutes allowance (e.g. 500 free minutes per month) so you can call the local access number for free
- You want to call landlines/mobiles abroad
- You want to call Skype contacts on their computer

It won't let you:
- Receive Skype calls
- Receive/initiate Skype chats/IMs
- Send SMS

To do the stuff above, you have other options:
Get a phone where you can install Skype (e.g. iPhone). For the iPhone (and Windows phones), you will need WiFi access to do any of the above (except for chats/IMs, those work over the regular operator network).

In the UK, there is the "3" mobile brand, which has Skype installed on all phones and allows you to do all the above over its regular network (so no WiFi required).

Then there is SkypeLite, which can be installed on a bunch of phones.

Note that here you have to pay when receiving Skype calls from friends and family. You will also use up your free minutes when calling Skype contacts on their computer or making international landline/mobile calls (in addition to Skype's int'l calling rates) just like with Skype-To-Go. For chat/IMs, you need a cell phone with a data plan.

Hope this helps a bit.

Also further to lonNW1's post, which by the way is a very good post and covers all the options, also note that skype Lite is only able to place calls in a small number of countries. if you follow the link lonNW1 posted the list of supported countries are included there.

Thanks
