Full Version: Skype doesn't share sound with other apps

I'm using the FC3 32-bit version of Skype from the Skype website on my FC4 AMD64 machine.
It works (I run it through artsdsp to get sound working), but it doesn't coexist well with other sound applications.
I can run xine and kaffeine together and both use sound and the sound is mixed and played on my single sound card. However, Skype and these apps are mutually exclusive when it comes to sound.
E.g. if I'm watching TV, or playing an MP3 or a MPEG on Kaffeine or Xine, then when Skype attempts to use sound it produces a "problem with sound device" error message. If I stop the apps (or at least stop them using sound) and wait between 2 and 15 seconds then Skype works with sound fine.
I thought the whole point of arts was to software mix sounds so that multiple apps can produce sound together.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong (or at least explain why it doesn't work?)

Hi, you've stumbled upon a problem almost half the other people in this forum are having, namely that Skype relies on OSS to supply the sound (or some wrapper for a daemon, like artsd). OSS (the free version bundled into the linux kernel) doesn't support software mixing. The daemons are supposed to do it, but never do it quite right. The linux kernel now supports ALSA which can do software mixing and other extremely useful things. Take a look at just about any other posting on this list and you'll find someone talking about (or most likely complaining about) the lack of ALSA support in Skype, so have a look there. There are some sticky topics at the top of the forum that are particularly useful for trying to setup the sound correctly. Hope this helps, best of luck...
