I am using Suse Linux 9.3 and Skype 1.2.0.18 on my notebook. Unfortunately I can only do one call to one number with Skype out. Afterwards a call to another number fails permanently. And then call to the number before is not possible too. I have always to boot again. In some Linux forums I found similar problems. They suggest to go back to Skype 1.1.0.13, which has not this bug.

Unfortunately my version does not accept rpm -e skype ...
rpm --replacefiles skype-1.2.0.18-suse.i586.rpm
rpm: only installation, upgrading, rmsource and rmspec may be forced

There is a little bug in the installation script of scype too, therefore
rpm -e skype-1.2.0.18-suse.i586.rpm
error: package skype-1.2.0.18-suse.i586.rpm is not installed
(that was after some attempts but skype is still working)

Then there is something which is not ok too.
rpm -i --freshen skype-1.2.0.18-suse.i586.rpm
warning: skype-1.2.0.18-suse.i586.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID d66.......

So I have to deinstall all manually. I hope skype will fix this bug soon. The only advantage of this bug is, that I cannot call so much and I do not need to put money on my Skype out account so often.

A small problem with the echo I could solve. You need to switch only in the Kmix Window Inputs one times both buttons (red one under and the green one upper) on and off or off and on. Then the echo dissapears. What a mirracle.

thanks I did see this link one month ago, gave it as advice to sb in a linux community, but could not find it again as I needed it. This failure has existed since version 1.2.0.11 in August 2005. So you know with 1.2.0.18 it is not solved.

Another little inconvenience is a minor lack in the rpm script. This prevents you from easy deinstall and install an older version. It was also not easy to get rid of the new version and I had to try some work arounds. In Suse distribution the rpm -e for deinstalling is by their script disabeled and you can not force to install a lower version. It will only be possible if in the rpm file is a kind of deinstall script included. Therefore you will get my exmples of strange outputs described in my first posting. This is for Suse 9.3 and may be valid for 10.0 or other versions too. Debian and Red Hat didn't restrict rpm, so this should not occur there.

Here are the magic steps (for Suse 9.3 - I did end of December 2005 update by Internet). You have to be root in terminal session to do this:

With find /usr -name "*skype*" you will find all files normally.

Then delete all files or rename them. Below you find a list (done after renaming and installing), which you help to find what all you have to rename. If you forget one the rpm install will refuse.

Then you have to download the rpm public key from the skype homepage.
rpm --import rpm-public-key_skype12018.asc
rpm --initdb -v
rpm --rebuilddb -v
It is a miracle for me, why the rpm install refuses without doing this. For my first installation it was not necessary.

After I have done all this I was able to run follow command to install the older version without trouble:
rpm -i --force skype-1.1.0.13-suse.i586.rpm

I hope that will help everybody who has same trouble.
