Full Version: How to REALLY get VoIP working on Linux....
Skype Community > English > Skype for Linux

I think we can all agree that while Skype is excellent on Windows, it has yet to perform particularly well in Linux. Since it seems unlikely that this will change in the relatively near future (from what I have read in various posts in this list, and given the significant gap between windows/linux versions of Skype), I think you might want to note that there are a number of Open Source voip options available. For example, take a close look at those listed here: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Open+Source+...e+VOIP+Software

I'm sure most of the readers in this particular forum are already partial to Open Source software, and will find that there are at least one or two projects out there that kick the pants off Skype when it comes to running on Linux. I'm not sure if it would get me in trouble to name something specific here in Skype's forum, but there is one project that I'm definitely moving to as it uses ALSA without any hacking around (and also seems to run fine simultaneously with Skype), and I will try to get all of my colleagues to consider using it as well.

How many of the ones you have tested have been able to call skype users?

I would love the test other ways of VoIP, however, my ISP in Brussels told me that they support only skype (which is ridiculous having in mind the ability of skype to make undesired traffic in supernode mode and that I have a monthly traffic limit) .... they didn't have resources for SIP, so they closed the appropriate port in the firewall lipssealed.png

this would be the right point to say goodbye to your ISP!
If they are not able deliver the VoIP packages they should offer pizza-service instead of internet-service!
If it costs too much traffic, why don't they regulate traffic? Or is it that kind of 'flat-rate'-offer which is 'flat' as long as you don't use it too much? I don't live in Belgium, and i don't know if this provider offers its offerings there, but this sounds like UPC...

Well, the provider thar "supports" only skype (anyway - I think skype is self-supported because it works with most of the firewall's setups) is clearwire.be. It gives me 3Mbit/s download speed (which is not verry stable) + 15 Gb traffic limit for 39 euro/month and it gives me no web interface to check my traffic, so they should begin with the pizza I suppose, however, I had the stupidity when I was in a hurry for Internet to sign a two years contract with them and now they will cut my head off to break it .... (the cutoff is = 170 euro!)

Every time I speak with the support about voip they say, But why don't you use Skype!?. Does Clearwire has some secret contract to promote Skype, blocking all other ways of VoIP, I don't know lipssealed.png

try another sip-udp-port and rtp-udp-port in your sip-phone.
at least my sip-provider tells in the faq, there is no strict binding to port 5060, and to use multiple phones at one ip-adress (e.g behind a router), they suppose to configure 2nd phone with 5062, 3d with 5064 aso.
rtp-port ist totally nonstandard afaik, some using 5004, some 8000.
anyway, faq says: 2nd:5006, 3d:5008
german faq-page: https://secure.sipgate.de/faq/index.php?akt...rubrik=100#num3

if needed, try same thing with nat, normally at 10000.

btw: twinkle uses alsa, works fine in version 0.5 (i don't mind getting any problems with ebay). ok - the gui, well it's 0.5. www.twinklephone.com

My current favourite, of those listed at that link I posted above, is wengophone (http://www.openwengo.org). It can be a bit of work to run it on Linux if you have to compile from the subversion source, but it's not too hard. And, of course, the windows version works without any trouble.

As for calling skype users? I don't know anyone with a skype-in account that I could call...is it possible to call normal (i.e., free) user accounts from non-skype sip phones?

In Austria "Wengo vs. Skype" already was in the media
in german

so voip already gets advertised on skype forums?
i take this as a + for skype forums, since it means, that free speech is important here.

dont forget, still, this is a skype forum with main topic on linux.

But skype is not supported on Linux anymore is it?

Well that's the way it seems at least ..

tongueout.png only thing it means: skype stuff doesn't even look at their forum. you can ask most serious or stupid questions to them, advertise, talk shit... everything you want, they don't react.
probably ebay fired all of them.

this is a BIG MINUS for skype, users begging "drop a line, what's going on" and they are left alone.

btw: thanks for the link. in a followup they report, skype says "linux/mac version of 2.0 will follow". that's what it looks like: skype/linux 2.0 coming 2009. and then, nobody is interested anymore, cause broken 1.2 has repelled users, and these morons are not able to publish a simple bugfix.
