My daughter is currently living in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She uses Mandrake Linux version 10.1. She has a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. Her sound card is an 82801AC97 Intel Audio Controller that was "built in" the laptop by Dell. Her problem is no sound. She tells me she has the latest version of SKYPE for her operating system. (She just installed it over Christmas). She keeps getting the following error "/dev/dsp-1 device busy" (without the quotes).
The following is a note that she just sent me;
[I was concerned at first because it said dsp-1 - my device is /dev/dsp. However, when I went to the Options tab on Skype, it had my headset listed as /dev/dsp, so I think it's just a problem with the way the error is printed out. I tried closing all other programs that could possibly be using the audio device while I was using Skype, but no dice. It still doesn't work.]
Do you people have any ideas/suggestions?
Thank You in advance.

Sounds like the infamous OSS sound clash problem that stops skype and music (or whatever) sharing the sound card.
Make sure she has nothing else running that uses sound, such as Amarok music player.
(Funny thing about this issue is it seems to be hardware related - I use Suse 9.3 and one of my machines has the problem and the other doesn't)

mmm... open the consolle and log in as root. then, give this command:
alsaconf
follow the instructions to configure you audio card and everything should be fine.
if you get a error message, try to install alsaconf (urpmi alsaconf) and then retry the procedure.
if you still have problems, don't hesitate to contact us in this forum and good luck!
