my daughter is using linux the phone rings and i answer but the noise is like a untuned radio ..... any ideads ..... thank you

Esp now there's been another method, guess I should add

Unchecking the option for Skype auto adjusting the levels solved 90% of the static for me on the skype test call number, even better on local calls.
I'm not sure why that is, except the test call is in EUrope, so maybe more delay in the internet.
edit: I'm using Fedora 11 and normal (not USB or bluetooth) headset.
