skype update to .722 of 2.8 beta - BREAKS skype. after update, can't log back in getting message "can't mount database"
obviously crappy regression testing by SKYPE development
workaround is
rename subdirectory <USERID> to <USERID>_OLD subdirectory
in macosx directory <USER>/Library/Application Support/Skype
doing so allowed login and also preserved contact list

I am having the same problem. Where do I find the subdirectory, can you give me a few more details. Is it on the local computer or the website?

You saved my Sunday afternoon, makr. Thanks!
I knew it wasn't due to Snow Leopard, because Skype worked until the update -- which Skype.app invited me to make!
Let's hope this thread's admin takes the complaints back to someone that will make sure the next update is not as seriously flawed.

You will find the folder (sub-directory)...
~/Library/Application Support/Skype/<your user short name>
... on your Macintosh HD internal hard drive, Mary.
Make absolutely sure you do NOT meddle with any folders or files in the folder titled ...
Macintosh HD/Library/<anything>
