Another user begging for a version of Skype for a Linux PPC architecture.

Please, either the source code to recompile (better), or the compiled version for PPC.

Onegai!

I don't understand why skype is not compiled on linux distribution on ppc.

The only reason may be that it will force us to use MacOS X.

Maybe it is a conspiration !!!!!

It is a joke. I don't think Apple would be so stupid.

We are waiting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
laason_
It could also be a great idea that skype would be compatible with iChat, msn messenger, gnome meeting, kopete.
It seems to exist standard that are in use by industry.

It make no sense to don't use them !!!

It could be interesting that if skype isn't capable to port skype to ppc that the community make an open compatible client !!!!!

Maybe, it is not the interest of you, but it would be great !!!!

Best regards

Hi there,

I would just like to add a few lines of 'the usual' stuff to this thread,

I am another happy skype user, also a Linux on PowerPC user, willing to have the possibility of using Skype on my good old powerbook. Skype is a really great app, and while I am aware of the fact that PPC as a Linux platform is in minority, we all know that skype for Linux/PPC is just a matter of doing configure && make on a ppc box, since Skype uses no platform-specific code.

Just look at the policy of Opera software - they distribute versions for almost every exotic platform out there.

Keep up with your great work on this application, and hope to seeing Skype for linux/PPC soon!
tonysmith1_
I'm just wondering if the announcement earlier this year by the company that produces the libraries used by Skype that Linux PPC libraries are now available will increase the liklihood of skype being available for Linux PPC any time soon?

Also, it looks like the last "Skype Staff" input into this forum was back in 11/04.

Another Linux/PPC request here for Skype!
MagicSN_
I am using an AmigaOne Computer, and would like a LinuxPPC version
of Skype (and best also an AmigaOS-version :-) ) for my A1.

After all my computer matches the hardware requirements of Skype according to the Skype homepage. Nowhere is written "x86" there, it just says "min. 400 MHz" ...

What external libraries are missing ? Maybe a LinuxPPC user has already built them and could help ?

I would love to get skype/linux/ppc as well. Pretty please. Also, is there anyone who could enable G5 internal sound on linux?
gsiddons_
i too would love to use skype under linux on my ibook. skype is the only thing keeping me tied to OSX!

Maybe the solution will be Gizmo, the team is more open and they said they will suggest it to the developers, since the linux version is planed in August http://www.gizmoproject.com/

They look like more open to suggestions than the Skype team ...
sicojola_
why leave us out in the cold here? running mandriva on G4 and want to use skype.

Is Gizmo Project a Skype Killer?
Thursday July 14, 9:23 am ET
Web Bloggers Praise New VoIP Service as ''The First Viable Skype Alternative''

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14, 2005--Gizmo Project (www.gizmoproject.com) announces the public beta of its free consumer VoIP software, heralded by early beta testers as "the first viable Skype alternative." Free downloads are available for both Windows and Mac users on its website. The software has won early praise from press and bloggers alike for its clean user interface, simplicity, and use of open standards and directory.

Each Gizmo user enjoys worldwide, unlimited free member-to-member calling, the ability to add U.S. or U.K. phone numbers to their account, and the ability to call the regular phone system for rates as low as 1.8 cents/min for U.S. phones, 10% less than Skype's U.S. rate.

In addition to these essential features, Gizmo Project adds a number of new innovations (www.gizmoproject.com/features), including:

* Call Mapping that shows the two points of the call on a world map
* Call Hold with user selectable music
* Call Blocking with user selectable message from polite, to firm, to "just rude"
* Free Voicemail to email with user selectable message
* Call Recording, which one blogger called "the killer app for podcasting"
* Interactive Voice Applications, provided by Tellme (www.tellme.com), allow users to get real-time news, stock quotes, and weather...even play a game of blackjack
* Call Subject tells the person you are calling the purpose of your call before they answer, just like email
* Realtime Call Quality Indicator works like the bars on your mobile phone, showing network issues that can affect call quality
* Realtime Presence like instant messengers shows your friends when you are logged in or on the phone

"Skype is a closed, proprietary network. This is bad for everyone but Skype. Open, standards-based networks prevent the balkanization that plagues the instant messaging world, with its five different and incompatible networks. Gizmo Project's commitment to open standards insures interoperability with any other open, SIP standards-based voice network," says SIPphone's founder, Michael Robertson. SIPphone (www.sipphone.com) is the voice over IP startup behind the Gizmo Project.

Gizmo Project (www.gizmoproject.com) is the first standards-based software to excel at usability, call quality, hardware compatibility and features. Point-and-click calling, powerful firewall traversal and proxy support means Gizmo Project works in nearly any network environment. However, because Gizmo does not operate on a pure P2P model its members' computer resources and bandwidth are never tapped to route calls, as they are with Skype. Exceptional call quality is achieved over broadband and low bandwidth environments by supporting a wide range of audio compression technologies including Global IP Sound, which is also used by Skype. Beta testers routinely report, "Gizmo Project calls sound even better than Skype."

Gizmo Project is available immediately for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X users. A Linux version is in alpha release now, and will be released for public beta in August. The simultaneous Mac and Windows release has kept vocal Mac users happy. Chris Holland of theAppleBlog.com writes, "(Gizmo Project's) Mac OS X software is very good...convenience, flexibility, this thing has it all!"

Gizmo Project has also received praise from technology journalists and bloggers around the world. Erick Schonfeld of Business 2.0, who had an opportunity to use an early beta of the software, wrote, "I like (Gizmo Project) better than Skype." Dan Schafer, respected tech blogger of Eclecticity.com, says, "I find Skype pretty usable, but the user interface on Gizmo is way better...I could see replacing a lot of my expensive cell phone usage (with Gizmo)."

More comments collected from hundreds of web bloggers participating in the Gizmo Project beta program:

"The Gizmo Project is the first to bring a truly-usable, user-friendly, cross-platform SIP client (Mac, Windows, Linux -- coming soon) to market."

Actually, Skype is willing to take suggestions. I emailed them the other day, they said that they forwarded the suggestions to the developers. (I hope that's true, but maybe not)

Just try, it won't harm ya!

Developers known about Linux/ppc support. They even replied once on this forum that support is not possible because they use external libs that are not available for ppc.

The problem is that skype people just ignore Linux/ppc. Linux/ppc isn't important for them because they won't earn big money on supporting it. skype is just commercial problem and earning money is most important thing for skype team.

Too bad :-( Also developers do not make any decissions like working on Linux/ppc support I guess.

Anyway mailing them can change things if the number of emails will be huge.

Add me to the list of Ubuntu PPC users who would *love* to use Skype. I've paid to use SkypeOut, and I've used it quite alot on OS X, but Ubuntu PPC is now my main desktop system, as I am running it on both a Blue & White Powermac (upgrade with a 500MHz G4 CPU from Sonnet Technology) and a PowerBook G3. I'm also a podcaster and like to record my SkypeOut calls for my shows.

One more for the chorus.. PLEASE let us linux/ppc users have a version of skype to use!

I'm using Ubuntu Hoary on a iMac classic 233Mhz... currently in college so making calls back home is expensive.. please make a linux/ppc version for us.. thank you!
flaviomoura_
I use gentoo on ibook G4 and I would like *very much* to have skype available for linux/PPC. I hope it will be soon available.

The thing that intrigues me the most about Skype, is how easily it can work behind firewalls... I still don't get it.

Anyways, I am yet another LinuxPPC user who would tremendously enjoy skype in that platform.

Thank you.

One more....
I don't want to buy an i386 platform just for using skype.
I am currently using pegasos 1 and 2 machines with linuxPPC running on the pegasos 1.

As it already runs on linux/x86 and on OSX/ppc it shouldn't be to difficult...

Would love to use it on my powerbook, switching to OSX for using skype isn't a way.

I don't understand why not. I mean, all it should take is a ./configure && make && make install, unless Skype is written in 386 assembler. But no, Skype exists for Mac OS X, so it must not be.

The libraries haven't been ported? Well, let's see what libraries the 386 deb needs:

Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-4), libgcc1 (>= 1:3.4.1-3), libqt3c102-mt (>= 3:3.3.3.2), libstdc++5 (>= 1:3.3.4-1), libx11-6 | xlibs (>> 4.1.0), libxext6 | xlibs (>> 4.1.0)

libc6 - Ported.
libgcc1 - Ported or platform-independent.
libqt3c102-mt - Platform-independent.
libstdc++5 - Ported or platform-independent.
libx11-6 - Platform-independent.
libxext6 - Platform-independent.
xlibs - Platform-independent.

I don't see any reason why not to release a PPC version.

I think when one of the skype reps talked about libraries he probably wasn't referring to code that the x86 binary was dynamically linked to. He was probably referring to 3rd party licensed code that is statically linked to the x86 binary. An ldd wouldn't show what libraries those were. That would also adequately explain why Skype's hands are tied with a PPC port. They may not be able to get their hands on the source code for those libraries and hence, not be able to port them.
worthawholebean_
I don't think that's it. Skype is one of the few things, along with Flash capability, the ability to develop using MySQL, and iTunes, is one of the very few things keeping me from spending all my time in Linux. I'd really like a Linux/PPC port.

WHat makes me mad though is that the developers never respond to ANYTHING us users say about wanting Linux for PPC. There has been demand for more than a year and a half now. Here's a FAQ entry:
QUOTE
What hardware platforms is Skype for Linux available on?

Currently, only i386-32. If you have a platform that you'd like to use Skype for Linux on but can't now, come say it in the forum!

So we came and said it in the forum. However, we have been thoroughly ignored for over a year now. I really love Skype, and if they would just tell us they will never do it, I'd be fine. But they hinted for a while and then ignored us.[/code]

Another user wishing a linux-ppc port of skype!
dds_
Waiting for the ppc port of the application, there could be something like a solution: running skype inside qemu. Recently I've done some testing with some applications I need for work, such as lotus notes, so I've created a 1,5 Gb raw image in wich I installed windows 98 (legally owned).

Obviously, if you don't want to use windows, you can use an image of a GNU/Linux system for i386 that you can find on http://www.oszoo.org. Be careful, you should use an image that has an X server or you have to install it by yourself.

The result is acceptable, now I'm posting this message with my iBook, from the virtual windows 98 I run with qemu. I've installed also skype, but I've to check the configuration of qemu for the emulated sound device. I think it could work.

Good luck!

Just to add another voice: even if the x86 build might work on the new machines the ppc-Apple machines will continue for quite a lot of time. I'm using Gentoo on a PowerMac and I'd like to be able to use skype as well inside it, not only in MacOS X!

I've been using ubuntu linux on a G4 ibook for quite a while. Working with sound art and graphic design. So far, my experience on the whole is: I never knew working on a computer could be such a breeze! And finally, I can actually get full application and OS support on the web, fixing problems in 10-15 minutes instead 10 days... bigsmile.png

But there's just one thing missing! SKYPE! Such a great piece of software. Handles most of my communication needs. And SkypeOut's been handy many a time, too. But I have to boot into OS X only for using Skype now. Only thing keeping me from finally getting rid of that beautiful but annoying cat.

So pretty please?
