i just downloaded skype about a week ago. i'm travelling to italy in a couple weeks and want to be able to talk to my family back home from my laptop. i've been testing skype to make sure that i am able to video call my house and its not working properly. everything will be fine for about 30 seconds and then the video of the person i'm calling will freeze. i can still hear them, but the screen is stuck on one image. my video is fine.. the other person can both see me moving and hear me, but thier video is still stuck on my computer. the weirdest part is that on thier computer, they can still see themselves moving in the little screen on the bottom left hand corner, it only seems to be thier image on my screen that is frozen.

does anyone know what could be causing this problem? i can't figure out if its my computer or thiers that is messed up ...
Bill Campbell
The latest version of Skype, 4.1.0.141 is causing video images to freeze or fail to find your webcam, i.e. you will not see the name of the webcam or a live video image in Skype>Tools>Options>Video Settings and you will not have a button to click to make a video call.

You can solve these problems by rolling back to Skype Version 4.0.0.226. Older Versions of Skype, such as this one can be found here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_skype/

You can also do a free test video call to my public test machine. I recommend you enable “Call Technical Details” before you call. You can download a free document here that explains how to do that from this Forum Post #2: http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=406991

Good luck

Have a great trip

This is happening to me. I have Logitech 3500 and I can see and hear my caller perfectly, but they see me OK and the I freeze. If I switch video off and back on it's OK for a few seconds then freezes. It seems to happen when the sync, which is out at the beginning, rights itself. I have vers.4.1.0.141 and have just downgraded to an earlier version as Bill suggests - haven't tried it yet, but I see there is a newer version - 4.1.0.166 = does this one solve things? (There is no .226 - only.227 on the site)
Bill Campbell
The new version 4.1.0.166 should solve freezing according to

http://share.skype.com/sites/garage/2009/0...or_windows.html

So go get it.

Same problem here, was not solved by 4.1.0.166.

I don't think it has anything to do with the camera (mine is Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000) or its drivers - while the video stops at the other party's side in some 20-30 seconds after starting a video call, it continues running in my own preview window.
Bill Campbell
What is the date of your 4000 driver?
Eerik
It is 3.02.2007.

Downgrading Skype to ver 4.0.0.226 solved the problem.
Bill Campbell
Well you need to find out what the problem is. You can't stay on 4.0 forever. smile.png smile.png

Ihave the sme problem with v 4.1.0.141 and a Chicony USB 2.0 notebook cam. So updating the Skype version doesn't work but going back to v 4.0 does?

How about trying 4.1.0.166

http://share.skype.com/sites/garage/2009/0...or_windows.html

It is supposed to solve the freezing.

Please let me know if it works for you.

Thanks

I've installed .166 and it makes no difference! How do we know which end is faulty? My sister is running .141 on her new laptop and I can see and hear her perfectly. I have now tried 3 versions of the software and I still freeze on her laptop, although evrything checks out on my computer.
Bill Campbell
You can both call my test machine.

Skype ID is: bill-on-skype-video

The test machine is on auto-answer with audio disabled

You should add me to your contacts list, but you do not need to wait for authorization.

141 definitely causes freezing. You should both be on 166

I had no issues with 141 freezing at all unless I was running a lot of different programs, but that is to be expected. Now that I have upgraded to 166, I get about 30 seconds into a call the person I'm talking to freezes up to me and I freeze up to them, but I can see my preview window moving just fine. It's really starting to aggravate me. dull.png

i was having problems with 141 but my gf wasn't. we both upgraded to 166 and now we are both having problems. it is so so frustrating.

Hi,

My friend and i are having the exact same problem, exactly the same, i just read that probably downgrading to version 4.0.0 will hopefully solve it, so i will have to guide her through howto get everything deleted...
Before she was using version 3.6 or 3.8 and this problem didn't exsist, so it looks like we will have to downgrade pity enough.

Hopefully this will get fixed in newer versions.

Greetings

GOOD AFTERNOON, I JUST READ YOUR MESSAGE RELATING TO SKPE VIDEO CALL AND THE PROBLEMS YOU'RE HAVING. I JUST DOWNLOADED THE NEW VERSION YESTERDAY AND I TOO ARE HAVING PROBLEMS ALL THE TIME....MUCH MORE THAN BEFORE I DOWNLOADED THE NEW VERSION, WHICH IS A HUGE INCONVENIENCE AND EXTREMELY ANNOYING SINCE IT SEEMS TO FREEZE AFTER JUST 30 SECONDS OF CHATTING TO THE OTHER SIDE. SO MUCH FOR UPGRADING TO THE NEWER VERSION!!!!!!!!!! DOES NOTHING FOR THE TRUST I HAVE TO SAY! :-( I WISH I WAS ABLE TO GO BACK TO THE OLD VERSION AND SUCCESFULLY CHAT TO MY FRIEND WHO'S ALSO JUST WRITTEN TO YOU!!! GREETINGS FROM ME ALSO.... ;-)

I have the same issue as the others here.

After starting a call, the video works for < 1min and then my image appears frozen to the person on the other side - although I see my preview fine.

I am running the latest 166 build. This is the first time I have tried video. Sounds like I should try to downgrade to 4.0 since it worked for someone...

My upstream DSL is at about 600Kbps. Seems like this should be sufficient. Is there anything else I can do to debug this?

Thanks.

Hi, I am having the same issue since I updated to version 166, everybody I know who is updating is getting it smile.png. I was trying to report this issue via the Help section, but I get a "This service is currently not available" message there. Is this forum being read by official Skype staff? Because I think this is a Skype issue and not a driver issue.

My girlfriend and I are having the same issue: She can see herself and me just fine, and I can see myself just fine but her video image on my computer freezes about every 15 seconds or so. She is running the latest version of Skype (just redownloaded last week so I assume it's the latest) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with Vista 32 bit and the built in Creative webcam (drivers reinstalled last night). I use a Mac running Tiger 10.4 and a Dynex webcam (which of course has no drivers or software available to Mac users). I have the same problem with my mother who also uses a Dell. I have no problems with other friends who own Macs and my girlfriend has no problems when she calls other Dell owners.

Just to review:

1.Possibly downgrading to earlier versions of Skype might work.
2. Possibly buying an external, USB webcam might work.
3. Something about upgrading display drivers and DirectX (I don't know what these are) might help.

Other than that it looks like we're out of luck...? In looking at other forums this seems to be a widespread problem across many versions of Skype and all kinds of different brands of webcams. The descriptions of when and where this happens are all over the place and even the solutions seem really hit or miss.

Anything else come up?

Thanks!
(Bill- what exactly would doing a test call to you do to help solve the problem? Not questioning just curious...)

same thing here. Just downloaded 4.1.0.166 into both XP computers with logitech usb webcams. Video statrts fine, then freezes at both received video ends. Onboard image at both computers stays live. I tested one computer with Bill's test camera and it worked for 3 minutes and never froze. But is that really 2 way video simul send/ recieve? Shoulld I uninstall 4.4.0.166 before installing the old non freezing 4.0.0.226?
d.texley
4.1.0.166 does the same for us as well. We have xp, our daughter has vista, she can see us and the feed does not freeze. We can see her but the feed freezes every 30 seconds until she disables/enables the video feed. After 30 seconds the feed freezes again.

Running XP sp 2, all other updates applied. Logitech QuickCam S5500

My dad had this problem (he's running a Dell Studio XPS 16). He fixed it by updating to the latest version of the driver for his webcam. So that is something to try.

I, too, am having this problem. If people are solving this by downgrading their version, it's obviously a problem with some new feature implemented in the new version of Skype. Perhaps the webcam vendors (i.e. Logitech, Microsoft) need to update their drivers for the webcams to function with the new version of Skype. I checked the version of my drivers for my Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000, and they were up-to-date. Hopefully, the Skype developers forward this to the companies that make webcams. Until then, it looks like I'm stuck with the old version!

i have this same problem.... if anything 166 made it worse.

I also have such a problem. I've updated recently to the newest Skype to see if it has solved the problem, but it didn't. Me and my girlfriend are both using the same version of Skype. What's interesting, is that(at least she says so) she can see me quiet good, while her video is going like 1 frame per 5 seconds.

For first few seconds after entering the videochat the video from her is really fluent, but after that it is staring to get slower and slower speechless.png. What's bugging me, is that (!) when i take a screen-shot of her, it is different. It looks like i'm getting the "fluent version" of her cam, but somewhere on my comp it is slowing down, and when i'm taking a picture of her, i'm taking the picture of the "fluent version" of her video (!). Hope You understand ^^.
Byku
So... Bill, i've tried Your cam. It works fluently in few first seconds, then it is starting to slow down(1fp2s tongueout.png). I've tried to launch Skype and your cam in WinXP in Safe Mode... it worked beautifully O.o... hmm... then i've booted normal version of WinXp again. Killed most user processes in task manager and called You... again, the same horrible disrubtions.

It's a fresh install of WinXP(installed programs: Adobe Reader 9.2, Catalyst Control Center etc, Avast, NetLimiter 2 Pro, CleanGP 4.4, Creative Webcam NX Pro Driver (1.03.03.0326), Diskeeper, Gimp, HijackThis, Java 6, K-Lite Codec Pack 5.1, NetFramework 3.5, Office XP, Riva Tuner, Opera, Firefox umm... and that's all of the important stuff). I've got old drivers from my cam... do You think that it might be the problem?

Edit.: I've got the newest available drivers speechless.png. Moreover, there isn't such a problem on my notebook with the same cam and internet connection(connected to the same router at my home).

Edit2.: I've attached a screenshot of this whole technical stuff tongueout.png. Btw. Although it writes that i'm getting 30fps, it looks like i'm getting like.. 0,5fps. Netlimiter shows that skype was using around 100kbytes/s of bandwidth.

Edit3.: I will repeat again, when i'm taking a picture of Your cam, it's taking the picture of those original 30fps, not this 0,5fps.

Edit4.: Btw. My system spec: Inter C2Duo E7300, Radeon HD4870, 4GB DDR2 and integrated sound card. I've got the newest Catalysts(9.9).

Edit5.: Downloading older driver(9.1) to see if there will be a change...
Byku
Installed CCC 9.1 and 8.9... and i'm back to 9.9. Might it be a problem with Service Pack 3? I'm not sure, but on notebook i don't have SP3 installed...

I'm low on ideas tongueout.png.
Byku
Reinstalled cam drivers, reinstalled audio drivers, reinstalled video drivers... nothing helped. I've installed Skype 3.8 also... well.... not only I had low framerate then, but also a lot of artefacts. I've made a picture how that delay looks.

Edit.: Anybody got ANY ideas?

Edit2.: I'm using Creative NX Pro cam tongueout.png.

Edit3.: Tested MS Messenger... works flawlessly... :S, totally fluent cam from my girlfriend...
Bill Campbell
Hey Byku!

Contact me with a time you would be available and we can test.

Make sure you have a ton of light coming from behind the web cam.
