Full Version: Manually Pick Supernode

Hi,

I am behind a very strict firewall and the network admin is considering blocking all Skype traffic completely because he doesn't like its P2P nature.

I'm wondering if there is a way to manually tell my skype client which supernode to always connect to. This way, I can setup a skype client outside of the firewall and use it to proxy my connections through. Then my network admin can allow skype traffic accross the firewall only if its going to/from this known supernode.

I read in a paper about the skype protocol that it puts keys in the windows registry, but I was unable to find them... I'm not sure if the paper referred to an older version of skype and maybe thats changed now... Here is the link to the paper incase anyone is interested. http://arxiv.org/ftp/cs/papers/0412/0412017.pdf

Thanks,
Scott.

Not a bad idea - also an opportunity for companies to set up an 'official' supernode for intranet users to connect with the world; even with possibilities for QoS...

While we're at it we should allow the ability to 'volunteer' to be a supernode. That would lessen the amount of people who are unwittingly struck with this malady.

Of course I guess not many people would volunteer. Or maybe they would. Skype should offer some sort of reward for people who volunteer then. Since they are making money off the bandwidth of the users it seems only fair that they pay said users back. <shrug>

Agree. Maybee 30% off on Skype Out, free voicemessages or something like that.

Or/and publish statistics about supernodes. That would appeal to peoples comptetetive side, like folding@home and similar projects.
