Hi.

Does anyone know if Skype Video works with capture cards?

I have a Hauppage card that I use with a camcorder for video conferencing, and Skype doesn't seem to like it. It works perfectly with MSN Messenger.

If I hit the "Test Webcam" button, it activates the sound coming through the capture card, but doesn't pickup a picture.

If I hit "Webcam Settings," I get the settings for my capture card (Video Standard NSTC_M, Signal detected=1, Lines detected=525, video settings), but it makes no difference how I set them.

I've tried "Default Video Device" and "Hauppage WinTV Capture" with the same results.

Any suggestions...?

Thanks,

Mike

It seems like only USB cams are supported now, a USB TV capture device will maybe work(?).

Actually my All-in-Wonder tuner worked so try it and report back smile.png, also I made it work with another capture card and a samsung photo camera.

My Pinnacle PCTV card works well with it too.
Try updating your card's drivers.

Hauppauge Win-TV works fine for me. I need to start Hauppauges TV-application once and select the channel before i can use it with skype.
Please also check this thread for a lsit of compatible devices (Be sure to report back if yours does/does not work): http://forum.skype.com/viewtopic.php?t=41162

That will be true for all TV tuners - as Skype does not have a built-in channel switcher. Some TV tuner drivers may have property pages to select channels, but using the native app would be much more reliable.
And make sure you quit the original app, or any other app using the card before starting skype video.

I'll put this thread sticky fo a while because it contains useful info regarding how to use a capture card with skype.

TV Tuner cads can be used with a connected analog camera to the S-video or Composite input of the card. cool.png

Or can be used to transmit live a TV show, if Windows Mixer settings are set properly (for recording: not microphone selected, but that line input of the soundcard where TV tuner's output is connected). Great if someone can't receive a TV program in his area but his friend is willing to broadcast it over the internet for him.

Could you possibly tell me which card you are running please?

Mine is a WinTV-GO (very basic card). I was using drivers v3.45.22282, and upgraded to 3.46.23061. Neither of them work, although it still works in MSN.

Hmmm.

EDIT: I was able to get it to work! I had to install an alternative driver for my capture card that I got here.

Thanks!

mike:

I tried the alternate video driver you note in your edit. I couldn't as yet get to work, athough the driver installed ok. Hauppauge WinTV would not load after this alternate driver was installed. (tried several different approaches) Using WinXP.

Tried both manual and automated installation. Too bad for me. My card is WinTV PCI with 848 chip set.

Did you do any tricks to get to work on you system?

Splitcam does work.

joe488:

I got it to work once. Since then, it hasn't worked again.

If I run the alternate driver, it will work, but very, very slowly. And try as I might, I could never switch it to the auxilary input.

I tried another driver, too, and had the same results.

Splitcam does seem like it will work.

Mike:

thanks for your information. I am up to SP2 with WinXP, so maybe the driver won't work with SP2.

I am now going to wait and see if the next version will just fix this kind of problem. Splitcam works for me, but it seems like it is a real CPU hog and surely not the proper way to go for the long haul.

Thanks again for finding this.

Hi all,

It's not work with an analogic cam connected to my NVidia Geforce card.

My Driver is "nVidia WDM Video Capture (universal ...)" and the picture stay black.

I thinks that in the webcam settings, we miss the capability to decide to capture from Composite / S-Video or Tunner for this capture card

TerraTec: TerraTV+: works.

TV-Programm must be started to cange to Composite-mode. TV-Card do not remember this value. TV-Programm can be started whithout stopping the call in skype (ignore the error-messeges). Sometimes the picture is bad. Then it is also necessary to start the Tuner-Programm.

My Camera: Nikon Coolpix 3200 (3 Megapixel)

I try the video-funktion with my Digital-Camera at my TV-Card with friends. They saw my pictures and was fixed on this stuff. They buy Webcams and now there are 3 Stations I have tested.

I think, that the pictures from the Digicam via TV-Card is more better then from the webcams. I told to my friends to buy logitech-webcams as a tip. But I think the money were better given to tv-Cards. They all have Digital-Cameras and the cost of a simply TV-Card is the same as for the quickcams they bought.

Are there simmilar experience for the Camreas? In this threat is only written, wich Kobination is working.

I have attempted to get my All-In-Wonder Rage 128 capture card working with Skype 2.0. I can see the camera image on my TV Tuner using both S-Video and Compsite. If I have the tuner open and running, the Skype test webcam says that "It cannot access the webcam because another applications has it running." If I close the tuner and test, I get nothing in the Skype webcan test window. If I try to click on the Webcam Settings button, nothing happens. :?

Once I have done all of this, my All-In-One disappears from the Select Webcam pull-down in the Skype Options box under video. It will not reappear until I restart the computer. Also, if I try to reopen my TV tuner, it will not restart. It hangs on the init window.

My All-In-Wonder card is about 3 years old, but the drivers and tuner are the latest from ATI

I would really like to get this running so that I can use the camcorder zoom and closeup features to send whiteboard images and product closeups to my design partners.

Any help would be appreciated

Regards,

Bob

I'd like to add to this thread as I have the same problem and spend hours trying to fix it.

After each fresh boot Skype connects only to the first video source the WDM capture driver offers. That's the TV-in.
So I have to fire up any application that handles the WDM driver correctly and change the input in there.
Afterwards, Skype will accept the camera.

While this is fun once in a while, it's no use if you plan to use the video feature on a regular basis.

Here's the step by step way.
#1 Test the camera in Skype - just noise.
#2 Close the camera (to get Skype to release the driver) and start up webcam software.
Here, the settings window does not only display the device (like Skype) but also a source list of that device.
Selecting the video in will display the webcam.
Close software now, so Skype can have access to the driver again.
#3 Open the camera tab in Skype again. Video works now.

This procedure can not be performed while trying to send video.

If Skype is serious about video, this needs fixing fast.

I have the same Winfast TV2000 XP Expert and it did not work with the 5.13.1.3307 drivers dated 10/18/04. So I downloaded the latest drivers - 4.0.107.3204 - and the latest PVR version - (wftv.exe=3.0.10.79) and now it works perfectly! Be sure to select the correct drivers when you do the update as you get a couple choices to pick from - but only the TV2000 Expert ones are appropriate.

Of course, you must first switch the input for the Winfast PVR application to "composite" to enable your composite camera source, but you don't need to turn off the application or anything.

Interestingly, if the PVR is set to tuner, Skype sees a video broadcast but it's not the same channel as what I have selected in the PVR software and it's black and white and not a great signal. So this wouldn't be a good setup to send someone a TV broadcast but I'm not interested in doing that.

I'm using XP Home, SP2.

Hope this helps!

Try splitcam, (www.splitcamera.com) you will have to configure skype or other video applications to use splitcam capture driver once you've installed it. And of course you will have to start splitcam in order to see any live video within your chosen video chat application. In fact splitcam will act like as if it was a selectable video capture switch bridge between for your webcam and your app. smile.png

Some of u may already know this but I thot dat I post this here so that others may not have to look everywhere to read this.

Even when u r able to get ur Mini DV Camcorder 2 work on skype, it will usually auto shut-off in after 5 mins when u r not recording anything in video-capture mode.

2 prevent this, pls do the followings:-
A) Remove ur DV tape before turning on ur comcorder in d video-capture mode
B) After u have completed step "A", your camcrder should not auto shut-down anymore BUT you may get some kind of DEMO or screensaver mode after 5mins and this wil disturb d video stream. To prevent this, make sure u can have completed step "A" and then only go to ur camcorder's PREFERENCE or SETTINGS or MENU or whatever they called it--->choose DEMO 2 OFF!!!

Now u got a good quality video webcamorder without the need to spend extra bucks on a sum lousy webcamera

Canon DV
Well my older version that I just upgraded from last week worked beautifully, however, after my update it sees my Canon DV camcorder, but Skype tell me that the camcorder is in use by another software. I have checked every driver and nothing is using my DV cam.. I'm trying to figure it out myself, if I find something I will let you know. MSN will work with my DV cam.. and so will trillian. By the way I updated just now with the bug fixes and it didn't fix my problem eather.
Let me know if you find some solution.

Hi, my card is made by Gigabyte. In add/remove programs, the softwares called "Gigabyte Tiger2." (But I can't find much info on the brand from Google.. >< )

I can use my card as a video source in Windows Movie Maker, but it crashes before I can try to capture from it. In PowerDVD, I can view my TV perfectly. In Splitcam and Skype, it's just black and audio doesn't work either.

Anyone have any idea how to get it to work with Skype?
