Is Skype legally via a patent not allowed to follow every other instant messanger clients way of grouping contacts? Skype finally added the ability to group contacts, but as far as I can tell I can group them but not see them listed as seen in AIM, MSN, Trillian, YIM, etc. I want to see per say my family contacts and under them see which one of those contacts are now online and then under family contacts I want to see friend contacts listing which one of them are online. It looks to me with the grouping contacts I have to click on each group created tab to see those contacts listed and who is currently on. A major change from previous versions. Its good that Skype has finally added this function many have requested, but all who requested I would say the majority had in mind this being implemented as seen in every other IM client.
Also, why did Skype change the ringtones? I liked the phone sound. Is this a move to distance itself away from being viewed as a phone alternative to the public and in turn regulating bodies?
Well conspiracy theories aside...Skype still rocks. Just wanted to give you feedback and possibly someone can show me how to group contacts as I wish it.
Cheers, Chaser

Agreed 100%.
Why is Skype so new for some things (like free internet telephony) and so old and prehistoric for others (like grouping and the "ur friend is typing..." thing)?
I cannot understand that!

At the London Skype Night earlier this week they actually featured their grouping as more intuitive than the 'traditional' IM client grouping. The bonus with doing things the way they do is that a person can be in many groups: e.g. if Peter is my friend AND my colleague, he can be in both groups.
I'm still testing to see what I think about it, just wanted to FYI you that it's a choice they've made.

I find the assortment of the contacts very good with skype! It requires surely still a few improvement, but I find it very good on the whole! Additional a possibility the contacts would be to be sorted as bad in others measure gladly, however not.

The feature you mention,
1) "Possible to put a person into two or more groups"
does not make impossible for Skype to implement the desired feature:
2) "Possible to have two or more groups expanded at once".
While I do like (1), I actually want (2) more!

Theoretically, I could achieve feature (2) myself, by first creating the Groups I really want (let's call these the "Real Groups"), and then creating one additional group for each combination of the Real Groups.
E.g.
--- Real Groups: ---
Family
Friends
Colleagues
Others
--- Combination Groups: ---
Family and Friends
Family and Colleagues
Friends and Colleagues
Family, Friends and Colleagues
Family and Others
Friends and Others
Family, Friends and Others
Colleagues and Others
Family, Colleagues and Others
Friends, Colleagues and Others
Family, Friends, Colleagues and Others
In practice, I would not want to this, though.
