I heard that Marcus was kicked off the project for failing to deliver.

I don't know about the new author, but he does have a website that has good info.

I wonder why the Muppetmaster was not consulted? He is a Skype genius in his own mind. tongueout.png

I never thought it was necessary to read a book to use skype.

Whats the use ???

Are they going to make money on that ???

I used to tell my friends that I introduced to skype:

"In five minutes you have it running and you can speak for free with people around the world."

Just imagine if I told them "you'd better read a book before installing".

hilario.

Skype works. You install it. You call. You're happy. But if you want to get some more advanced functionality out of it, you can pick up one of these books, and if a company as large as O'Reilly takes a contract for it, you can bet that it's going to make money.

I made a pretty handsome contributing to Skype Hacks *cough* in stores this month *cough*. It's not just "This is how you make a call", it's "This is how you wire your house for Skype", cost saving estimations, tips, tricks and more. So yes, there is a market and there is a purpose to these publications.

We had better make money publishing our books, or we are doing somethng very wrong. smile.png

The fact that there are countless forums, web sites, and magazines that provide technical information and answer questions about Skype is an indication that users want/need more detail about how to do certain things. So yes, I believe there is a need for a book. Some people will need/want the book, and others won't. It all depends on each individual's proficiency with Skype AND what it is they're trying to accomplish.

Our book covers everything from a simple installation of Skype on a Windows machine, to configuring firewalls and setting Active Directory group polices on a corporate network. So, I believe there are many people of varying skill levels who will find information that is of value to them in our book. Others who don't think they need a book for any reason, won't buy it or read it. That's fine.

On Michael Gough's site, there is a full table of contents and two sample chapters that everyone can view and make their own decision:
