NO ! In the past I did not read anything and skype work correctly ! Ok I will read it !
And it doesn’t just work on Windows, like some other software you may know. Skype is also for Mac OS X, Linux and PDAs using Pocket PC !
It is not writen you have to read the FAQ and it works ! For me it does not work an mandriva 2006. So I stay in mandriva 2005 !

It "just works" on my Mac OSX, Windows AND Mandriva 2005.2 and 2006.0 machines as well...
Of course, I do know which sound system I use in Linux and on Windows and Mac I don't think I have the possibility to use a sound system that doesn't work (to my knowledge there is only one in each). Maybe the difference between your 2005 and 2006 installations is simply that they defaulted to different sound systems?
It is not writen you have to read the FAQ
No "it is not written", it was a suggestion from me to you because there are some frequently asked questions in the FAQ (and the sticky threads of the forum) that deals with problems people are having with skype on linux. When something doesn't work, reading things that have helped others is usually a good idea.

I also am having issues with 2006 and Skype, and given the posts in mandrivauser.org, am *far* from the only one.

With Mandriva 2006 and Skype 1.2.0.18, i am getting the problem that the first call succeeds but the second call fails. The problem (seen also on other distros) has a long thread here:
http://forum.skype.com/viewtopic.php?t=32290
People seem to get around the problem by downgrading Skype. There are links to an older version in that thread.

Everyone gets that, it's not a Mandriva problem but a (very well) known bug in Skype that they seem to be unable to fix (despite the fact that everyone seems to agree that the only reason is that they don't close a filedescriptor properly).
Downgrade a couple of versions or simply wait a minute or two before doing the second call. If they have not abandoned the linux version completely, they may fix it within a year or so.

You problem might have to do if you are using KDE or GNOME, the sound device must be either on 3 frameworks.
KDE uses artsd
Gnome uses Alsa
a third one is called ESD
if you are in kde and there is somthing that goes through ALSA you WONT get any sound.
For that you have to configure the device to go through artswrapper and then it will sound.

I've had not problems like that using ALSA and aoss, but I don't use the headset for much except Skype so you might be right. Anyway, if they are still working on getting ALSA-support into Skype (how hard can it be?) that problem is soon to be history.

ALSA is one thing but the actual KDE support for alsa is what it might be not working.
KDE uses art and if a devices uses alsa, there most be an arts wrapper on top of the aplication.
My question:
- Which desktop env are you using?
- If you are using KDE, have u tried launching it from gnome?

No why should I? KDE works great.

Well kde doesnt work great because skype is not working. And you should switch to gnome because then you will identify if the problem has to do with the artsd wrapper.
I am not saying you should make a switch and ´work´ in gnome from now on. But you should do this to identify the issue with your skype. I mean you want to solve it right?

Well. Skype works for me, I really can't see the point in changing to gnome just to see that it works there as well.
I just want them to fix the bug caused by the open fd to /dev/dsp1 after making a call and I would like to see non-emulated ALSA-support (which they say they are working on) because I am quite sure it will work even better then.

Jzd, GNOME doesn't use ALSA directly. It uses the ESD (ESounD) to pipe sound. ALSA is a kernel sound system and the ESD and aRts are sound mixers. KDE 4 uses gstreamer to pipe sound to ALSA. GStreamer is an opensource multimedia framework and is not a soundmixer, therefore, no time delays anymore.

Try 'whereis skype' if it's not there.

Hey thanks for the replies on this. I'm still having trouble with this. i did "whereis skype" and it informed me that it is in the /usr/share/skype but the folder was empty. So i tried to download skype and in install again, but got the same error message i started with. Then i tired to uninstall it with rpm -e skype but got this message below.
# rpm -e skype
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.47636: line 1: fg: no job control
error: %postun(skype-1.2.0.18-mdr.i586) scriptlet failed, exit status 1
So now i have no idea on what to try next.
