Skype’s control over Mic Volume
In new Skype:
Normally we would ask you to try disabling AGC but that can not be done in vers 1.4.0.xx. Only solution to try is:
Currently in version 1.4 it is not possible to deactivate AGC (Automatic Gain Control) or EC (Echo Cancellation) as they are controlled automatically by Skype itself.
To make toggling AGC and EC active and possibly solve the difficulties you are experiencing you have the option of downgrading to version 1.3.0.67, which is available for download here:
http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup(1.3.0.67).exe
After downloading and installing you may try toggling AGC and EC via the config.xml file found in:
To find Config .xml enter:
%AppData%SkypeSkype logon name in the address bar of Windows Explorer and it will display all files, regardless of whether they’re hidden or not
(You need to quit SKYPE first):
Find one entry in the <Call> and two in <General>
<Call>
<AGC>1</AGC>
And
<General>
<AGC>1</AGC>
* To turn off AGC, set both values to 0. If the entries are missing in the file, add them). Save and close the file once done. Make sure you don't have Skype running while making any changes to config.xml (important!). When AGC is turned off you can also make changes to the microphone volume value (decreasing it may improve sound quality for the receiver e.g. reduce noise and increasing it will make you more audible). AGC by itself is a feature that controls volume automatically based on conditions and is activated by default because in most conditions it provides the best sound quality.
<MicVolume>xxx</MicVolume> (xxx represents the microphone volume value).
Try setting the number to 250 (or playing around with numerical values from 1 to 255 until you get satisfactory volume).Oh yeah, in the last view months i find that the sound quality and connection of skypeout really sucks.
is it just me??? or is there more people out there experiencing the same thing.[/quote]
Update Skype, sometimes update firewall:
With updating SKYPE sometimes your firewall must be updated.
Exit/Close your current Skype by clicking in system try Skype icon (down near the right corner green spot) and choosing “Quit” from there if needed.
Open firewall, in programs, delete Skype.
Run Skype and allow to connect
This also effects SP2 users who should follow above procedure.
With SP2 firewall.
Disabling external firewall will enable XP firewall by default.
So if you disable any other firewall XP firewall will now block your connections.
So remove Skype from XP firewall program list as well.
Alternatively you can try to rename skype.exe to skype1.exe and see if you are able to connect then.
