Hi,

Can someone help me. I have a OPEN LEGAL IPHONE. And have a Three Network sim on contract. on my Nokia 6700 I am able to make and receive skype2skype calls no problem, since Three use the 3g Network.

I am able to chat no problem when i pop my sim into my Iphone 3gs and when i click call I get error messgae ' unable to make skype calls ove 3g network' or something.

On the skype help page it does state:

'Can I use Skype over 3G?

Most 3G networks should support Skype presence and chat. However, Skype calling is not possible via the iPhone. Please note that data usage...''

How do I configure or what do I need to do to activate skype 3g calls on my iphone, please help me solve this problem

Please see the attached image of the error message i keep getting.

thanks

Bill Campbell
No.

Apple does not allow it. Skype has disabled the function to comply

Regards,

Bill

It is not Apple who has to decide to block me if I want to place a Skype call on my handy.

By the way I hope that the EC will clarify this point.

I have disabled 3G on my iphone and still unable to make calls off my WIFI. I’m connected to my home network?

Skype should have a complete step by step FAQ for users how to use their iphone on the website as it is very misleading

Since apple have told me their phones do not have restrictions where its Skype who have the reduced restrictions on calls. Also all Iphones are unlocked but the carriers have a lock to their phones.

AT&T announced this recently, I wonder when it is actually going to be functional.

AT&T EXTENDS VOIP TO 3G NETWORK FOR IPHONE

DALLAS, October 6, 2009 – AT&T* today announced it has taken the steps necessary so that Apple can enable VoIP applications on iPhone to run on AT&T’s wireless network. Previously, VoIP applications on iPhone were enabled for Wi-Fi connectivity. For some time, AT&T has offered a variety of other wireless devices that enable VoIP applications on 3G, 2G and Wi-Fi networks. AT&T this afternoon informed Apple Inc. and the FCC of its decision.

In late summer, AT&T said it was taking a fresh look at VoIP capabilities on iPhone for use on AT&T’s 3G network, consistent with its regular review of device features and capabilities to ensure attractive options for consumers.

“iPhone is an innovative device that dramatically changed the game in wireless when it was introduced just two years ago,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets. “Today’s decision was made after evaluating our customers’ expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer.”

AT&T allows customers to download or launch on their wireless devices a multitude of compatible applications directly from any lawful Internet website. Additionally, because AT&T uses GSM technology, the most pervasive and open wireless technology platform in the world, we support customers using any GSM phone that works on AT&T’s frequencies.

*AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.

Skype's court. How soon will Skype rease an updated

can someone help me how to make skype skype calls using WI-Fi even thats impossible.

Disabled 3g.. and Doesnt work

see pic with 3g Disabled. Connected to WI-FI

Due to contractual restrictions 3g calls not allowed over skype fine. Three have no problems with skype calls. No COntractual restrictions. I have this from their store and online technical dept.

Uhm, no, you're not. You're connected via GSM/EDGE, no WLAN. At least while you took the screenshot ;-)
Tero Hurskainen
We have a 3G enabled release ready to go any time. We are obliged to sit on it due to Apple, whose developer licence agreement has not been changed to allow VoIP services on mobile connections, talk being cheap. That is what the "contractual restrictions" refers to.

Once we are allowed by Apple to release a 3G calling app, we will do so right there. You will need to update to the new version via App Store to enable the feature.

From the look of the pic you posted, you're connected to your service carrier and not Wifi. Go to setting, touch Wifi, turn it on, look for your network, connect to it. and you see three wave bars on top left.

Look at my pic attached. It shows AT&T and the three wave bars, meaning, wifi connected.

Any idea when the contractual issues will be worked and thus a new skype release?
Neil
Skype never pre-announces such things

it will happen very soon after Apple changes the rules
alexostr2
Work fine over 3G

Neil
different carrier no doubt -- is the phone jail broken or was this never an issue with Orange?
alexostr2
Yes is jailbroken . And in what a problem to make jaibroke ?

Or it is forbidden by the law? It is my phone that I want that and I do.

But I hope that the following version will support calls through 3G without Jailbroke

as long as you don't care that you void your warranty . . .

the official Skype version that supports 3G will not require the phone to be jailbroken

that won't help if your phone is ever so broken (& therefore in need of service) that a restore is impossible smile.png
alexostr2
The apple itself cleans jailbroke from phone when the new firmware = pure phone lets out the new firmware .

And a software it is impossible to break phone, always it is possible to make restore.

It at me already the second iphone, I know all

doesn't help if you have a hardware failure, sorry, and although it may not have happened to you, it IS possible to brick an electronic device with bad software
alexostr2
Certainly I will lose a guarantee if I make so bigsmile.png

Hi,

Etisalat 3G carrier in Emirates doesn’t have unlimited data plan so, if I have 1GB data plan per month however I use it they will charge me to every 1 KB extra. I just don’t understand why skype not working on our carrier as long as I will pay for any extra data.

not specifically, but it has been announced that it will happen (at least in North America, so I assume worldwide) but Skype is waiting on some paperwork from what I heard
Johnni
I just signed up to Skype thinking I can use the 3G and WiFi. Argh. I guess I'll have to wait til the new app release. Still Skype is money saving. :-D

Hi Neil,

Is it a amtter of days or weeks or months???? It has been more than 3 longggg weeks since ATT made the announcement about removing the restriction.
Johnni
You can use 3G for AT&T right now. But, its better to wait for an OFFICIAL release than to do it the other way. I successfully used my Skype on 3G and WIFI for ATT US iPhone. But the quality isnt that good, probably because its a 3rd party not overlooked by ATT/Apple/Skype. So yeah.. people should be patient and wait.

that question should be directed to APPLE, not Skype

And that won't matter if your phone is out of contract, as all 1G iphones and many 3G versions are.

Don't you guys see? Skype is slow and lazy to release software as it is. They don't want another Ebay debacle on their hands so they are waiting for Apple to change the verbiage before they update their app. My suggestion would be to submit the app and put the ball back in Apple's court. The Skype app for the iphone has been long overdue for an update as it is. It's got to be by far the laggiest app in the store. 1 minute just to make a call with Skype??

Hey buddy if you're going to ignore other peoples posts ... then don't bother commenting.
A skype rep stated that the 3g app is ready to go, but Apple is still holding it back. <<we all know how Apple likes to have total control over the app distribution process (good? bad? .... don't know but definitively unfair)>>

I'm just wondering how much will having skype on all the time will affect my battery life.
Has anyone tried it out??
Shingo
And I am sure you know as well that both AT&T and Apple have lifted the ban on VOIP nearly a month ago. So if what you said was true, where's the Skype update for 3G VOIP?
boston
Skype's silence on this issue is deafening indeed. Why don't
they tell us how soon they will release the update for voip over 3
g??

first of all Skype never pre-announces such things, but in this case it is not up to Skype -- it is up to Apple
crigor
Why isn't it made clear that it is only possible under very special circumstances to make calls with skype from an iPhone? I read the advertising paragraph where it says that skype works over any Wifi connection, forked out 35 bucks for headphones with a microphone, and, of course - found out with the first attempt that skype has blocked calls over VPN connections. Thanks for the misleading advertising guys!
Partial solution:
This version of Skype runs on iphones and ipod touches. An ipod touch will never be able to connect to a 3G network. The OS knows if it is installed on an iphone or an ipod. Use this information in your program to remove the VPN restrictions for ipods, and make some of us really happy.
And if you have no intention of fixing this, then for goodness sake make it clear that skype will only work at home where you have direct network access (and where you dont need skype anyway).
Tero Hurskainen
I repeat: we can release an update that will call on 3G the very minute Apple allows us to. The ball is firmly on their court and they're not very forthcoming.

Re: VPN problems. Please use the search. It is another Apple bug: we get false info back from the OS when determining the connection for blocking 3G VoIP. VPN gets slumped in with mobile. The bug is filed with Apple, feel free to follow up with them.
