Full Version: WP-S1 Skype Phone, 3 (Three) Network UK. Problem with Skype application

I own the WP-S1 Skype phone from UK Network 3. I updated to the latest Skype application Version 3.64.0.1 about a month ago. Since then the application has been very buggy.

  • Only able to sign in after multiple attempts. Sometimes getting errors when signing in.
  • Unable to call some Skype users. I can call some Skype users. I can't call some skype users. There's no real pattern.
  • When ringing another Skype user, I cannot hear the ring tone at my end until the other user picks up i.e. the next thing I hear after dialing a Skype user is the voice of the person if the call is picked up.
  • Skype users who I manage to ring cannot see my Skype ID. It shows up as 'Unknown' at the other end.
  • Highlighting a Skype user from the contact list and choosing 'Call' or pressing the Skype button on the phone hardly works. I have to go to 'Options' and then select 'Call'. This takes multiple attempts.
  • Skype to Skype Calls drop randomly and frequently.
It seems you can only report the problem to 3 (Three) through their webchat service. When I did, they advised that I have to wait for the next Skype application roll out and update. The "3 (Three) technical support web chat agent" made it clear that the problem is for Skype to fix, Not Three.

3 (Three)Hutchison 3G Uk is not taking responsibility for this.


In the meantime, I am left with useless phone since I use it mainly for its Skype functionality.

Anybody sharing my frustration?

yes we are sharing your frustration! just descovered this probelm after a firmware upgrade done by '3' as part of a repair, online chat still didn't offer any solutions!

AFTER upgrading my wp-s1, i lost my skype, informed skype, they said its is 3s problum, i have handed my wp-s1 to the 3 shop in stains, uk, to be fixed, i will/might get it back in 10 days time, what got me, was this, the staff said they did not know about the problum, even though there was another custermer with the same problum in the shop, wait, my nose is getting longer, i am now going to local paper about this and other departments, there are 1000,s of people in uk with a wp-s1 that does not wotk and three are not doing anythink about it, there are keeping very huss huss about it, i am waiting for my phones to come back, the thing is, three will try and charge me for the phones to be fixed and say that it was me that brock the phones

I think you are suffering from 09.09.09 Skype horrible upgrade. It is network-wide and told to be fixed by Monday. FYI, please follow this direct link to 3Skype phone forum.

I had exactly same problem. Had skype message asking to upgrade and pressed yes. I had some error messages and now the skype icon has gone. I can see the application in download file as version 3.80.0.2 but cant launch it. I have phoned the C/S and they took all the details. They have have many such reports and apparently working on it, said it was network wide problem. Hopefully will gt sorted in few days!!!

I think they are working on this and at least, you are not alone under this chaos. The hypothesis of what had happened given on 3Skypephone.com sounds reasonable to me.

Yes it seems that this S1 phone problem is happening to everyone. Be on your guard though as you will need to return your phone to the shop you purchased it from for repair. My group runs 6 phones and already we have had a case in Hertfordshire where we were told the phone was out of date and had to be replaced at our cost.

This is not true and I am investigating the employee to see if they were told to say this by their management or just trying to get a crafty sale for easy commission at our expence.

Under the consumer purchasing act this phone has been rendered not fit for purpose by the supplier, so must either be repaired or replaced at their cost. It is important for your phone to go back to the shop you brought it and you must have proof of purchase.

As Network-3 has been advertising Skype free for life it will now be difficult for them to avoid the problem they have caused to all the S1 users. It is the shops responsibility to fix the phone, replace the phone or offer a refund. Should you have problems I recommend you go to your Citizens Advice Centre and take the shop to the small claims court for a refund.

Alas, I've found a way that you can get skype up and running again without having to send the phone back to 3. Basically I think they've created a new version -> 3.81.0.0, which works.

But the problem is that when you try to upgrade, the application would freeze. Here's a solution, which worked for me:

Go to menu -> settings -> master reset. Enter '0000', then wait till the phone turns itself back on. Go to the launcher menu, select 'more apps', then finally select 'my applications'. Select 'options' on the skype mobile app, then select 'check upgrade'. This time it will let you download the skype application, and you shouldn't have any troubles working it.

Worked for me at least, let me know if it works without doing the master reset step.
