Full Version: An open letter to Skype

I, as a paying skype user, deserve that my operating system be supported properly.

I paid for my skype subscription because Linux is claimed to be a supported platform, and yet, when it comes to it, Linux is not a supported platform. The Linux version is at least 3 years out of date and no longer works on many Linux distributions.

There is no excuse for this, and I, as a paying subscriber, will not put up with this for much longer. I hereby give notice that I will be cancelling my monthly subscription to skype unless the skype for Linux version is brought up to date, and made compatible with modern versions of Linux. I give skype three months to rectify this neglectful situation, which is a fair amount of time to resolve the issues.

If skype cannot do this, maybe due to lack of technical ability or affordability, then outsource the project to someone that can, like http://www.linuxporting.com or something. It isnt rocket science, it is a matter of treating your customers equally when they pay an equal amount of money.

I couldn't agree more.

I have online numbers, unlimited country subscriptions but they will be cancelled as the linux skype client is ugly & doesn't work & has less features.

IMHO there could be a little more options in pool, like "I will NOT continue my subscription" case for example, I've bought 1 year subscription, and I would like to select that I will consider continuation depending on treatment of Linux users.

It said, that most popular Internet Telephony operator gives such program, that sending SMS requires installing python scripts and connecting tham throught Skype API... I am not saying about other options, including those paid once that Skype earns, and could earn more money on Linux users... for example paid calls....
more over... Linux engineers usually earns more and are more geeky. Geeky means, more open to switch from traditional Telephony operator to Internet Telephony operator, even buying subscription...
Another thing is that Linux community is networking much more and loyal to each other, so might group against bad treatment... what will affect PR of Skype.

To sum it up - from my friends, I am one that buys Skype subscription and one that uses Linux... Simply, I don't get it. Mobile Linux phones, and nettops are quite simmilar to Linux desktop and all of them getting more and more popular, why not support all of them?

I can't believe SKYPE has forgotten LINUX users. Thanks to Linux users is that Skype is what it is. I can't believe all those windows updates and ABSOLUTELY NO LINUX UPDATE.

I use skype on Mac, Windows, Linux and Windows Mobile. I used to love skype because of it's support to all operating systems. But now, I will consider changing

I have a subscription, online number, etc etc. But I will cancel, since I can not see any improvement on the linux version ( the easiest to program by the way )

I totally agree. I stopped using Skype (besides few times when I had to contact few people) and I won't consider using other services because of this fact.

I agree. In my configuration skype rarly (randomly) works. Somehow everything else does work (3.0 MID does not work for me).

I will cancle subscription for one basic reason - why the hell I should pay for service that is not working. I'm not interested whose fault it is - if you want you may send a patch for pulseaudio which would fix the problem.
Fact 1: I'm paying for skype not for pa
Fact 2: Everything else does work with pa

Couldn't agree more with you Michael.

This program is in one of the worst states that any program on any OS that I've used has ever been in.

If this was a free program, well, tough titty, as some would say, but if I PAY for it and don't get any usability, I won't be paying for it much longer.

Totally agreed.
If canceling the accounts is what it takes for the SKYPE developers to wake up, so be it !
No excuses accepted for being so far behind for the LINUX version. Only actions and solutions are acceptabel.

Skype never worked in my laptop (Compaq Presario F700). I never could make the internal microphone work. I had to buy a Philips phone system because I had one number in United States an two numbers in Brazil. Each time they release an Ubuntu upgrade, my first test is Skype, but so far doesn't work. I both my laptop almost two years ago. I believe Skype had more then enough time to fix this.

Now I'm looking for another Voip service. Does someone knows a better replacement for Skype?

I just wanted to weigh in as well.
I depend on Skype heavily for my business. I was also planning to make the switch to Ubuntu. However, the fact that Skype can't get the basic audio working is actually forcing me to delay my migration.

I love Skype for how it has changed how I handle my business. But the support for the linux build is truly appalling. I'm not talking about the latest features -- I'm talking about even getting it to work properly.

I think Skype can be a key part of the whole package of the new technology universe -- but completely alienating everyone who is on the cutting edge of this is extremely foolish. I think having a strong and working linux version will actually lead to greater adoption of linux. All I can say is please, get this done soon.

I completly agree with the manifesto. No normal reason can explain that Skype -- which core goal is make communications available and which is known by its expertise -- hasn't developed, untill now, an acceptable version for Linux. I'm firmly convinced that the only answer is a non-public deal with Microsoft. Perhaps Skype, in difficult circunstances, did this (very bad) opintion as an emergence move. But even in this case, it would be time to change: in some months, Google will launch a Linux distribution which will change all the OS ambience; in Europe, even Microsoft is being forced to propose a new policy on browsers (now, it promises to include Firefox and others in Windows...)

I believe three months is enough time for Skype to change. Please, do it! I love the platform, and I'd like very much to keep using it.

Thanks for this information as it explains why I can't find any help on getting Skype working on Ubuntu 9.04.

I will now happily go and decide on a libre VoIP software package that works and has support.

Thank you!

Yes, skype for Linux is in a disgusting state. I'm recommending to don't use it at work, cause it's not more a cross-platform IM system.

It don't have neither a web client for fast purposes "out office"!
