Is there anyway to improve the shared screen quality? I had someone share their screen with me and I couldn't read the text. They couldn't read text on my screen when I shared mine either. If I set the shared screen to display at actual size, it's really small which is the probably problem. Making it bigger distorts everything.

Can you make and attach a screenshot of this problem when you do a full screen sharing so we can see the quality level.

Do you have good video call quality with the same person?
kurtd
We don't have web a cam so I'm not sure what kind of quality we would get. I can say that audio quality is perfect. See attached screen shot.

the technical call info shows that the connection between you two is not the best and that skype is complaining about low network speed.

This means that you can't have good video quality.

Are you both on restrictive network environment?

Try enabling uPnP on router to get direct connection.

Also what is your network connection speed?
kurtd
We are both on the same network. The connection speed is 16mbit download and 2mbit upload. Our corporate firewall blocks all outgoing and incoming ports except for the standard ports like port 80.

What ports need to be open for a better connection?

Is there a post that shows how to read that connection info?

I also was disappointed in the quality of the screen sharing. I was expecting quality on the level of RDC or even netmeeting and instead got a really fuzzy picture whose text I couldn't even read. If I am going to help grandma fix her computer or show a powerpoint then I need to be able to clearly see what is on the screen. Being able to watch a video over screen sharing is much less important to me than crisp text and images. The codecs which work well with moving video do not necessarily do the same with the type of images and text found on a computer screen.

For screen sharing I would also gladly trade (some) latency for readability.

I also noticed that screen sharing is an either-or situation with video. Having both at the same time would be much better.

Right now I would have to say that a skype video connection with netmeeting is a more useful combination than the new skype beta screen sharing implementation. That being said, I am very excited about incorporating screen sharing into skype and hope to see it improve.

It is important to note, that your screen resolution will need to match the screen resolution of the desktop you are sharing for the best quality, currently, when the person sharing the desktop is using a higher screen resolution, than what you currently have.

So ask what screen resolution the persons desktop is, have them match your screen resolution, or you match their screen resolution.

You can change your screen resolution, by using:

Windows Control Panel -> Display -> Settings

After sharing a desktop, you can go back to what your normal settings are at anytime.

Go to:
Tools>Options>Advanced>connection and set a port to use there and forward it on your firewall. Also make sure you have checked the box to use ports 80 and 443, it helps to go through corporate firewalls.

Unfortunately there is no explanation about it, but many things are easily understandable for computer pro's, for example packet loss and connection type etc.

I am on a 100mb LAN with the computers sitting next to each other.
I am sharing a 1280x1024 screen onto a 1280x1024 screen. Skype was in UDP mode. skype 4.1 to skype 4.1 and I also tried skype 4.0 on a different computer with the same results.
It looked like a 640x480 badly compressed .jpg of line art expanded onto 1280x1024. Chat text was unreadable.

Reader in case the quality is such bad then can you please report a bug about it on our public issue tracker. Please include logfiles there.

I did a test between my 2 machine's while sending resolution was 1440x950 and the text was clearly readable on the other side.
