Hi,

I am very new to linux, just today, so apologies in advance if this is just down to my ignorance.

I tried to install current version of skype with brand new install of ubuntu 9.04. Downloaded ubuntu package and opened but package installer gives the following error:

Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libqt4-core (>= 4.2.1)

I don't know what it means or quite where to start. Any help greatly appreciated!

I've had no problem installing Skype from the .deb file.

I've had a number of problems getting Ubuntu to accept the microphone as an input source. After setting the input source to pulse and much mucking with the audio level settings I can get audio from my microphone into skype.

Now the problem is this. If I call my home phone from skype, when I speak into my skype microphone it takes approximately 7 seconds for the voice to come through to my phone. When I speak through the home phone, it takes about 1/2 second to get into my skype headphones.

7 seconds is an unacceptable delay for sure. I had better results running skype on a guest windows OS (Virtualbox) even with all the fuzzing sounds.

I am unable to use the Mic--when using Skype.
I have UNR dual booted on the Acer Aspire One D150. The mic works fine when using windows and skype but does not work when using UNR. I have tried the following commands: Sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get install libqt4-core libdqt4-dev, and sudo apt-get install skype. I have also gone to admin>sound>devices and changed the audio conferenceing from defaul to intel ALC272 analog OSS and also changed the skype setting alike. Still no success.

BTW. How do I start my own thread?

COMON now !

so uhm all the above and more crap is all I get from Ubuntu 9,04 and this skype.
what the heck is this? ubuntu 9.04 says ALSA, but skype says PULSE -well that must be your fault not mine ! wait a minute, did you try esound too sadsmile.png ?

Hey, isn't this 2009 ?
Now, if I install "Crunchbang 9.04" all this goes away and this apparent same version of skype works great ! even in the latest PCBSD (audio), and of course Windows skype works like a charm ! err whatever. Hello !!!?

In fact, i'm afraid to mention the above very nice distro-fix simply 'cause I don't trust skype anymore 'cause skype has so many proprietary codecs and corp(s) stuffed up their ying-yang they don't know which way to turn or program ?! -they only know how to charge for them.

well here, charge this skype:
I hate skype. Paying for skype obvisouly doesn't help either (for Linux). It was better when it was fairly FREE.
So lets see, EKIGA(VOIP) might eventually replace skype ? Gawd I hope so.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried getting skype and Ubuntu 9.04 and all this "pulse" crap to work but I still had no Mic.

But This quick and dirty DID WORK:
# sudo aptitude search "pulse"
# sudo aptitude purge "pulse"
(remove all the "pulse" driver packages, ...)
# sudo reboot
# In Ubuntu 9.04 -> Sound Properties -> Volume Control
-> enable Mic.

(if skype is installed set all the audio crap in skype's options back to "autoselect/defaults...", and/or alsa)
or,
# sudo aptitude install skype

Thats it. Skype works perfectly.

you could probably leave the "libpulse0", "gst.reamer0.10-pulseaudio", ... client packages and skype will still work. ?

But note !, obvisouly if you use pulse (as a server) extensively then don't remove those.
-For me I don't give a crap !, alsa, oss,... are more than good enough for me and I need skype
err atleast until EKIGA can get's better than skype -now that would be good.

The Microphone on my Dell Mini 9 does not work with Skype 2.0.0.74 and Ubuntu 9.04. I tried all the tips and no luck. I even reformatted my hard drive, reinstaling Ubuntu 9.04 and Skype with different settings. The only way I could get Skype to work correctly was to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the Dell factory Ubuntu DVD. doh.png
