Semi competent Ubuntu Linux user needs help with skype and his Logitech Quickcam S5500.

I have installed the v4l1 v4l2 drivers and done the preload trick. This at least gets the camera working in luvcview.

When I try using skype it says

No overlay format found.

This is because skype wants to use RGB right? And luvcview -L lists MJPEG and YUV formats only.

I tried installing gstfakestreamer watnot but I got compile time issues and gave up.

Is there are command line switch to get Skype to support YUV?

I know I have an NVIDIA card, and was using the proprietary drivers, but turned this off and still no joy.

Or is there a version of skype that supports YUV?

Pretty stumped. Any help or direction would be appreciated.

That's funny, I got ignored in the Ubuntu forum as well. I wonder if open source software is supported any more? I mean I know skype is not open source, but if open source software is dead then why support its applications?

If you think I am being unreasonable, then what percentage of people who have switched to linux and are getting fed up with being ignored when they ask for help and are hovering over the "this is no good. sod this for a laugh I'm going back to windows" button do I represent?

Hi, I'm not sure you're actually being ignored. It may be that no one has come up with an answer.

Unless I'm reading the timestamps wrongly (I only come to these forums occasionally), you posted your original question 2 days ago?

Firstly, you sound like you've looked for a solution pretty well already. I don't have this webcam myself, so I can't test much on my onw machine that would help you.

Secondly, what problems did you get compiling the gstreamer stuff?
Sometimes these are really easy to fix, and sometimes that are really nasty...

Thirdly, I infer your webcam is a UVC device? If so, have you looked at the UVC driver site?

http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/

Now I realise that your current problem appears to be a video-format compatability issue, but perhaps reading the video stream directly as UVC will work where other drivers don't?

Sorry I can't offer more direct help.

Cheers!

I don't think this is a YUV/MJPEG issue. I just bought a Logitech Quickcam Pro for Notebooks, and luvcview -L only reports MJPEG and YUV but it works perfectly out of the box with Skype. If only I could get hi-res video to work now....
