What audio apps are you running? Make sure none is using your audio device!

Same here.
I never been able to run Skype due to this "audio problem".
I tried running it in Mandrake 10.1 and 10.2 - same issues.
I don't run any audio applications while I run Skype.
I think it's due to the fact that Skype doesn't support ALSA, but only obsolete OSS (I can run GnomeMeeting with sound and video without any problems).

If you are using KDE and run in Debian, try editing your kmenu entry and make sure the command line for that entry reads "artsdsp -m skype". This will pipe Skype through the KDE sound system and allow you to play music and make calls at the same time. At least it works in Mepis when running xmms. I can be playing tunes in xmms and simultaneously make a test call to echo123 and it works just fine.
The Gnome desktop has a similar command to pipe a sound application through its builtin sound system. Not sure what it is though.

@phillfri - hey dude maybe u could have an idea on this...
At first run/launch of skype i am able to hear my speaker give a ring_out tone. But when the other party answers, i cant hear them, as also they cant hear me. All im hearing is my voice coming out from my own speaker.
On the second attempt to call, i no longer hear my ring out tone though it is ringing and also when answered, still no audio from and to...
any idea there? wish u could help me on this....
