Skype Community > English > Linux

hi everyone
I have tried all available versions of skype for linux, but I could'n connect to the internet with it.
I'm behind http proxy with authentication,I have exported the http_proxy and https_proxy environment variables like this - for example:
http_proxy=http://my_username:my_password@proxyhostname:8080 but it doesn't work.
Can you please tell me are there any other requirements for connection throught the http proxy
or is there something else, that I should do

Thank you in advance
Irena

I have the same type of problem.

I have Debian Linux.

You say that skype supports http proxy, SOCKS, etc.

But there is no way to configure it to use one. I export the variables as follows:

$ export http_proxy="192.168.0.4:3128"

But it doesn't work! Somebody from super users, please help us!

I wonder why nobody in the know would reply to us.

If it does not work on GNU/Linux, why not tell so? I would understand it, since the GNU/Linux version of Skype is sort of beta.

I guess it is a company policy -- if it doesn't work just keep quiet about it, right?

Please, I still hope to receive a clear explanation of HOW TO USE SKYPE THROUGH PROXY SERVERS IN GNU/LINUX. And with examples, if possible.

Thanks in advance and best regards.

I have never tried to use proxy myself, but for no version of Skype details about proxy operation are complete enough...

The first thing that is unclear is WHEN skype tries to use the proxy, and how much it tries the proxy if it does at all!

In the case of authenticating proxies, I could never obtain a list of the authentication methods supported...

The problem is the same for all platforms!

Hehe, today I noticed something.

I gave up trying to make Skype use the proxy. I configured IP-Masquerading on my network. I configured my browser (Firefox) to use the proxy.

When I started Skype I noticed that it keeped two connections open -- one to my proxy and the other directly to an Internet server.

Funny, just when I do not need it, it does use the proxy (although not for all its connections).

Next time I used Skype - it didn't use my proxy at all.

Weird.

Yes, looks weird...

Would be nice to have more details about the connection-initiation process of Skype... (proxy selection, firewall-passthrough and friends) This way we could get a clearer view over the issues people are facing with proxies or their network connections!

Hi everybody,

have you been able to set any proxy options in the options dialogue (Tools -> Options...) from the skype main window?
My skype tries to connect before I even can tell it that I'm behind a proxy. Tools -> Options is not available (its greyed out). In the Windows version it works, though. How stupid is that??
I'm using ubuntu 5.10 and Skype 1.2.0.18.

How did you tell Skype to use the socks proxy?

download the tsocks
read the README or INSTALL

good luck

My university has now allowed the use of skype but with the skype for linux 1.2.0.18_API I cannot reach the options dialog. Tools -> Options (like on this picture from the windows version http://isservices.tcd.ie/images/internet/s.../skype_opt.jpg) is grey. The only thing available under Tools is "Select language". I mean, why won't the program let me make the necessary adjustments?

The tsocks program is not documented very well, I have *no idea* what to fill in in the config files.
