While I was on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), Skype was working well. I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 a few days ago and now, Skype no longer will load up. I can see that, at first, Skype will take up a lot of the CPU power. But after about 10 minutes, it gives up. When I try to load up skype from terminal, the error message that I receive is "Segmentation Fault." I don't know what's wrong.

The skype I was using while I was in Ubuntu 8.04 and when I transitioned to Ubuntu 8.10 was the skype.deb from the skype website (http://download.skype.com/linux/skype-debian_2.0.0.72-1_i386.deb). When I first upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10, I did not do anything with my Skype application. Then, with the advice of someone in the Ubuntu+1 chatroom, I tried the medibuntu skype deb, but it also didn't work.

Please help me. I use Skype for calling regular phones. Without Skype, I'm pretty much isolated from making calls.

Hi

have you tried the static skype?

I had similar problems when I first upgraded to 8.04 and this solved it then.

NickF, an advanced user, published a solution that deals with "wrong architecure." I do not know if it would help with a Segmentation Fault, however. Basically, you have to go into the package and change every instance of "i386" to "lpia". I tried to find the posting, but the search function here is stinko, and I cannot locate it. I copied it to a .pdf, so I will try to upload it here (don't know if it will work, though). It seemed to work, and I got this messaage: Upload successful and is available from the "Manage Current Attachments' menu." Good luck. --Steve

My situation is different. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 and configured it to use OSS4 instead of ALSA and PulseAudio. Unfortunately I couldn't get Skype to work with that configuration anymore, but I read on the OSS4 website that I needed the OSS-enabled binary.
QUOTE
* From 1.4 onward, Skype supports OSS using a separate OSS-enabled binary. The regular binary will not work!
* Arch: install skype-oss
* install static OSS version from skype [5] (Direct link to latest static OSS version: [6])

So I downloaded "skype_static-2.0.0.72-oss", unpacked it, ran it, and... Segmentation fault. What could be the problem? How could I figure out what the problem is? sadsmile.png
