What are Skype's plans to release a client for the blackberry bold that will use its data and wi-fi capability. This device is probably the best smartphone on the market until the G1 comes from Google. I almost do not need my laptop anymore - not having skype for it means I have to take my laptop on vacation!

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but there's a free program called iSkoot which works as a Skype client for mobile phones, including BlackBerry devices. You can check it out here:

http://www.iskoot.com/skype.php

Mobile phone data networks don't have enough bandwidth to support Skype voice calls, at least not in North America, so the way iSkoot works is by dialing a regular call through one of their regional access points and then connecting you through the Skype network to the party you're trying to call. You can use it to make calls to both Skype PC users and regular landline users through SkypeOut.

Note that since iSkoot makes regular phone calls, you'll be charged your regular airtime rate for the call, plus long distance if you're not in the same city as the access point you're calling. Thus, iSkoot might not be exactly what you want. However, if you have a "My Faves" type plan with your cell carrier, then it will work quite well for you. What I did was added the closest iSkoot access number to my list of favorite numbers with my carrier, so that I get unlimited calls to that number 24/7. This allows me to call my Skype contacts for free whenever I want, or use Skype to make cheap long distance calls.

IM+ for Skype - the best I've used. I don't want to offend Halfpixel, but unfortunately iScoot uses airtime minutes and sms, and I chat really a lot! that's no good for me.
SHAPE's app uses Wi-Fi and data, I would recommend you to try it, it's free for the first 7 days and that's worth it. Well at least you will have something to choose from.

somebody are using Skype on BB Bold? with wich one program? i am not sure that exist program with we can use Skype for free without charge on mobile account.

hello everyone... does IM+ only work when u are using a wifi network? or can u use it through the normal blackberry services provided by ur network?

Thanks

I would ABSOLUTELY DISCOURAGE everybody from using iSkoot!!! I've downloaded it twice and each time it messed up my phone. Had to reinstall all software, because it's battery would drain in only a few hours. It would also not boot up in the morning, although it was fully charged when I turned it off at night. I missed two important meetings as a result. Very embarrassing. I am now looking for a better alternative...
BTW: The same exact thing happened to my friend who started using iSkoot after I suggested it. She was using it on her Blackberry and also overslept... sadsmile.png

Hi mate,

As far as i know, the IM+ is solid program, though they have configuration issue...

But you have to purchase to software after 7days trail version...$29.99

Still waiting for official skype lite version.

IM+ Skype is a robust platfrom. Although I am waiting for Skype to release their mobile app for the BB Bold, I've used IM+ on a Pearl and Bold for sometime now and it is quite reliable and functional. You can use Wi-Fi for data and chat (not for voice calls though). You can also configure a local number for calls, where the app will have SkyOut call you to connect an incoming or outgoing call. This is useful when you are traveling abroad and have access to a local phone line. I personally like it although it would be great being able to use Wi-Fi connections for placing voice calls.

Tried iskoot: Did not run reliably on my phone, and seems to create issues when removed from the phone
Tried nimmbuzz: Never worked on Bold, latest official OS, no security policies.
Tried IM+: The best so far, but no VOIP calls over WLAN. IMHO not worth the money to just use it as a chat client.

Don't see an alternative to real skype on BB. I will have a look at Android or Pre for my next private phone because of this. BB will have to remain my business phone, but without skype.

I think that either RIM, or the providers, are blocking the release of a real Skype client. I don't believe in a technical reason.

just my two cent's. Might be totally wrong too...

Does someone knows is Skype already released thier client for Bold?
If so, where can it be downlowded?
Trent
Yoel,

Welcome to the community. There was a request for Beta Testers posted on the forum a little while ago but I have not heard anything about a client for this platform yet.

Bugger! this is really annoying. Skype seems to provide a version for everyone except BB, even iPhone FGS!

My teams use skype a lot and everyone has BB, I imagine we are not unique in that :-)

Can somebody give a date when we might see Skype to BB?

Cheers

No, the absolutely refuse to answer anyone's questions regarding the delivery date of this software.

I am beginning to hate this company
