Has anyone else noticed the sound alert not working as it did in the 3.8 Skype?
In the new beta 4.0.0.116, I don't get audio alerts of incoming IMs if the Window is open even if its out of focus and I'm working in another window. The window just flashes and remains silent. In the older skype, if the window was out of focus, you always got sound alerts for the incoming message but not if the window was in focus.
I personally use Skype quite a bit with IM. I leave chat windows open as I work waiting on people to respond. the audible sound lets me know someone has said something and I switch to their window... for me, this is a major problem and it WILL be what keeps me from using the 4.0 version if its not changed before the rollout of the final version. I simply depend on that audio as I have a lot usually going on.
I'd like to also take this time to say that I feel the skype team is taking a major leap backwards in development. I think many people agree, and I think that the team hasn't listened at all. As much as they'd like to think they're open to what people want, they are obviously only tailoring skype to what they want it to be and not what people are actually using it for. The new version with the big window (Yes I Know they allow compact mode now... yay) was put in with the assumption that everyone uses Skype for video and voice chat. Not Everyone does. I would encourage the skype development team to go through this forum of suggestions and really look at what people are saying.
Thanks,
Bill Sargent

The sound isn't working for me either. And on one of the IM's I just received, the window didn't flash.
Downgrading again, and giving up on the beta. I don't have time to keep switching back. 3.8 only has one bug that I was looking for a fix for -- the window flashes when someone goes away or comes back.

I tested it over on my machine.
Sound alerts work as designed for me.
I am getting sound when new IM comes and I do not have Skype in focus and that person chat opened.
I will not get notification when the chat is in focus already.
If you still have problem then please write short step by step guide how to reproduce it.
Thanks.

Hi there i also experience the same difficulties with IM sounds. So step by step instructions that you can see...
In default mode.
1. Start chat with somebody. Do not change contact window.
2. Open different application (ex. FireFox), when the same contact sends you IM there is no sound.
In compact mode.
1. Send someone IM
2. Focus on Skype main window without closing chat window. Just leave it next to the main window, but focus on the main. There is also no sound when new IM is received. Unless you close IM window. Also when you leave IM window open and use anoter application (firefox) - no sound just flashing tab.
Hope this helps.

Well then, you must have some magic version that works. LOL This is the kind of stuff that really bothers me more than anything. This application has been around long enough to have gotten most of the main features working but I hear everyday from the people on my contact list of Skype performing differently for each person. Some people say skype doesn't blink at all in the task bar to alert them, some people say that skype blinks when people's status changes from Available to Away and back... etc..
Anyway, as you can see from the other replies in this. I'm not alone

And my problem can be reproduced ...
1) Switch to compact mode.
2) Open a chat window with soemone, and send a message.
3) Switch to firefox and begin browsing.
4) When the other person replies. No audio alert. Just a flashing
window in the taskbar.
To get audio at all:
1) Switch to compact mode.
2) Open a chat window with soemone and send a message.
3) Close the chat window
4) Switch to firefox and browse.
5) When the other peson replies, you'll get a flashing window at the bottom, a tray icon that blinks, and audio as well as your conversation tab being lit up.
This has been happening in every beta of 4.0 I've used. Even earlier ones. I assumed it was somethng wrong with my configuration or me using Windows Vista 64bit or something. BUt its not obviously.

Others I know are having the same issues.
I only use compact mode. I dont like the large window default view now. Just too big even on my wide screen.
Thanks !

I also am not getting sound for any alerts whatsoever. If Skype is minimized or not in focus while I'm using another application, I am also not seeing the orange tab in the taskbar every time. Sometimes it does, but most of the time it doesn't. For most messages, there has been no indication or notification that I have received a message.

I'm seeing the same results as posted above. I see the window flash when an IM gets new text, but no audio notification is played. I do get the notification area icon update when a new IM comes in.

Just wanted to add to this thread that even in the options section of teh Skype Beta the notifications do not produce sound. I was getting no sound from notifications like everyone else, and when you go to Tools -> Options -> Sounds and then click 'PLAY THIS SOUND' there is no audio either. I also have had complaints of lower call quality from friends and family with the new beta version. Although i quite like how it works overall. Just wanted to add this as no has mentioned it, its not just that no sound is playing when it should for notifications but you can't even test the sounds in the options pane, so maybe the problem lies there somewhere.

I tried to test the sounds and it works for me, using Vista. So its not the problem there, i would rather think its the small glitch in new interface, and how the IM is handled. Just to let you know, it was not improved in version 4.0.0.168

same problem here. just installed the beta, which does fix a glitch i was having with pamela. but now, as reported above, the sound alert does not work on IMs. i am using WinXP. i am only getting sound alert if i start a chat with someone, then close the window and then they reply. otherwise, no alert, whether in or out of focus. updates on a fix, Raul?

Same here, if I'm not near my computer and miss a new chat start I just have nothing clear after this to show me that somebody is writing to me. No new sound alert for his desperate 'hello' and just a ridiculous little orange sign in the task bar, even no flashing stuff for me.
It's especially bad when you use the auto-hiding task bar of Windows.
An option to have no chance to miss a message, even in an opened chat, is absolutely necessary.

So far so good. Running Windows 7, it is appeared as the bug has been fixed. However, for me its not loud, compared to 3.8.

Hey there,

I am using Skype Beta 4.0.0.181 under WinXP (SP3).
Thanks for your help!

have you selected correct audio device under audio options for notification messages?
It works for me under Vista.

I also had this problem, that the new skype, not the beta but the stable version 4.0.0.206, did not play notification sounds on my computer.'PLAY THIS SOUND' under Options did not work with me too.
I am using the NVIDA nForce driver, I rolled back the driver to my previous realtek driver and noticed that the sounds started to work fine. Then upgraded again to NVIDA and everything is Ok now.

Raul is right.
I too had the problem with no message alerts playing, so I searched and found my way to this forum. I had already checked my sound settings and was convinced it was not that but after his message I went back and checked a second time. Under "General" > "Audio Settings" the options for "Microphone" and "Speakers" were correct but the one for "Ringing" was not on the correct setting. I changed this and the sounds played ok!
So guys go back and make certain you audio settings are correct in all three places!

Same problem here: Usin Skype stable 4.0.0.206 and can't ear ANY sound alerts at all from the day I upgraded, even in the options window.
Devices are ok, including alert device. I also have NVidia nForce drivers, that other one mentioned before May it be related?
Please confirm witch drivers/sound cards you have, folks with same problem.

If you are sure that your devices are correct then please create a log files of Skype session when you should hear some notification sounds and file a issue about it on Jira.

I had the same problem with my sounds. Under Options : Sounds, I clicked "Mute all sounds" and then "Enable All Sounds." Got my sounds back. I had switched from Default View to Compact View, so maybe that broke the sounds.

I just performed what you suggested and I still have the problem. I do not get any sounds when IM messages come in, just a little "pool" ball thingy if I am lucky to look. I am running Windows XP Service Pack 3. All my sound options are correct, but when I press the little green play button I don't hear anthing either. Using Skype 4.0.0.206 I have Soundblaster

Same for me. 3.8 worked just fine. I just installed 4.0.0.206. Somebody IMed me; the skype window was behind another window. No sound. I tried to test the sounds out at Tools/Options. Tried the Mute-Save-Enable-Save toggle and it did not work. I even shut down Skype and restarted it (in case reg values are cached); still did not work. I have used Skype for several years. I have not seen this bug before; I did not beta-test 4.0.
Thanks.

Hello, I and several friends are still having this problem.
I am using version 4.0.0.224. I have checked all my audio devices settings and they are set properly. When I go to manage my sounds and click play this sound, I get nothing. I am using XP w/SP3.
Should I and my friends downgrade? We use the chat quite a bit as a prelude to calls and while we are playing online games. While playing these games, the task bar is hidden so without an audio alert, we don't realize that someone is talking to us.
Thanks,
Sean

I just upgraded to .226 and since 4 I have not had the pop-up tray notifier work when I got a new chat. People coming and going shows up a pop-up, but new initiated chats don't. The old version worked. Running all bought and licensed MS XP prof Office Pro and SP3

Hmm... after raeading what you posted, I thought to myself, "Surely that's not it. I've tried everything!" Well... I looked and did my 10th check of all the audio options and looky! There it was. Turns out when you have 2 thiing with (2 audio High- Definition device) by their names, it's easy to mix up
