Well, as the topic says...

I have installed the precompiled skype (with qt) version into my home-dir. The problem now is, that skype doesn't ring. I tried to start it from the comand-line with

skype --resources-path /home/pm/Progs/skype-1.0.0.1

but it still doesn't ring. Does anybody have an idea?

BTW: Everything else works perfectly.

Hi!

That's strange...
On my computer here this works.

But you can try following:

cd /home/pm/Progs/skype-1.0.0.1 && ./skype

Then it have to work, I think.
When the resource path is your current working directory,
then you don't need to specify any command line parameters.

I have tried that. I even tried to run it from that directory with the command-line parameter, but still no sound.

I have no idea what it could be, since anything else works fine. It's just a little bit annoying to have to keep on watching the screen to see if somebody calls...

BTW: Could it be that it has to do with gnome sound-daemon not running? I use alsa and have tried to get that daemon to work, but had no luck. Since I don't need it because everything works just perfectly (even playing two files simultanuosly - the only thing that doesn't work is window-sounds like startup or errors) I figured that i could live without it.

I just downloaded and installed the latest .deb package (i.e. 1.007) and the call alert sounds now work; they didn't in 1.0.0.1

Thanks. 1.0.0.7 works - nearly...

Now I have an even better Problem :-) I have tried the following things (always from command-line, since from a shortcut there's no sound):

- run from anywhere (I have a symlink in a PATH-dir) -> no sound
- run from skype-dir -> no sound
- run from anywhere with resources specified in command-line -> no sound
- run from skype-dir with resources specified in command-line -> SOUND.

Now I am really puzzled and have no idea what to look for anymore... sadsmile.png

Oh, and I use the version without QT compiled in since I have it on my pc - if that could be an issue.

OK - now I found something thats even more interesting.

When I start skype from its directory with "./skype --resources /home/pm/Progs/skype" or with "skype --resources /home/pm/Progs/skype" (which should then use the symlink to start skype) it wokrs.

Also I have noticed a thing in the menu. Since I use the echo-contact to test the sounds by sending a message I right-click on the contact and select an option which appears with different names - depending on how I start skype.

When I start it from its dir with resources specified it says (where sound works):
"Start Chat"
Whereas when I start it in another way (where sound does not work) it says:
"Send an Instant-Message"

Is it using 2 different Versions? What could be the problem??? Right now I would be very gratefull for any hint...

The command line option to set the resource path should be \"--resources-path /path/to/skype/install\" and the not matter from where Skype starts it should find it's resources. (To test if Skype can find them, just try changing the UI language).

I guess this is just the string hardcoded in Skype binary and english language file (skype_en.qm) which are different. In one case skype uses the build-in string as it can't find the language file, in the other case it uses the text from the language file.
