Full Version: suggestions for the next skype for linux

I've got the following suggestions for skype for linux (some of them have been working in 0,94 but are not anymore).

- chat conversation - it was VERY usefull to close the chat window by pressing the esc key - when you type a lot it is much more usefull to close it this way, than to reach for the mouse just for one click...

- chat window in background - it would be nice if this window was in the background if I want to. At the moment any letter written to me and sent results in pop-uping the chat window on my screen, which is very inconvenient. If it would stay in the backgrount with the sound notification of a new message it would be great!

- skypeout calls - it was once possible to enter the telephone number I'd like to call and press enter. Now I have to make clicks to call (by pressing that green icon). Pleas enable the enter-pressing calling, or at least enable in options the possibility for activating it.

ok, enough for now smile.png
when I get the next ones I come with them - be ready! wink.png

For me this works, you should check your alert settings in Skype options! Note that your Window manager may also influence the global behavior by prohibiting some kinds of focus-stealing (which happen when IM-window is popped-up).

My problem: the chat window pops up, but, what I really appreciated under Windows was the ability to hide the chat window by pressing ESC.

How can I achieve that?

Thanks, Lukas

Well, for sure I will not do that. This functionality worked once in a previous version of skype and works perfectly with mozilla-firefox' pop-windows for download history, extensions and the like without modification of my windowmanager's config. Hence, why shouldn't it work the same for skype? Maybe, that's a (feature request|bug report) for skype for Linux?

Thanks anyway.

A 64 bit version would be nice as well (I know it's been posted before...) so I don't have to boot up my backup computer every time I want to make a call. (:

A small size window. The Skype client window is very big! :-( Maybe, a windown like gaim or Kopete.

I'd like to be able testing the sound output and recording capability, along what gnome-meeting does for me. For me it is the microphone that makes problems and I have not yet figured out why, the receiving sound quality is far superior from what gets out of my machine.

It seems like CPU load makes a difference to sound quality. Any comments here?

My firewall has some problems with skype. It contacts (without further action from my side) so many sites that one could think it was some kind of a worm. And I have not a single contact at the sites contacted. What is this? For Linux it would be nice to learn about the iptables commands skype regards as appropriate. A simple help entry would be sufficient.

Why not adding more search functions?

I mean for example:
search for age, for online-status and of course the possibility
to select the colums to be showed (comment, age, location, ecc...)
a great thing should be also searching using the asterisk.

Some of these function are already available in the windows
version, why not to port them to linux? ;-)

An other thing: what about the smileys button? bigsmile.png

Thanks again
It seems like CPU load makes a difference to sound quality. Any comments here?
If you are running at 100% CPU load (or peaks) you may suffer sound problems as Skype can't get all resources required for compressing/encoding the audio stream.

(It starts a connection and hopes to get an answer) Except you did configure your netfilter to limit amount of incomplete paralell connections you should have no problems!

Well, what about video conferencing integration for skype 2.0?
That's what I really miss in skype.

Uhm, another boring thing to fix:

On my 1.8GHz P4 skype eats 10-20% of my cpu load even in background. That's may be not necessary please clean up the dirty code causing that!

biggest function needed:

Using multi-threaded sound systems like ALSA, aRts, esd and such and not OSS!!!

Also, webcams are good too! wink.png
