Hi,
I wan to use skype on Kubuntu 8.04 64 bit. However I can not install it. After I downloaded it says wrong architecture. I tried about 10 different ways to install it (the ones I found in this forum or other forums on internet).
Does anyone know the way to install it?
In most cases when I try the command that is forum at some time it says incorrect source or something like this. So I was thinking that maybe this information is outdated.
Thanks,
Alfas

Running 32-bit skype on 64-bit Ubuntu via the static or dynamic builds works mostly fine.
The real problem comes up when you try to use a DV cam in this setup. In order to use the DV cam under skype you need to use something like dv4l + vloopback
http://dv4l.berlios.de/http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Motio...xLoopbackDeviceThis configuration requires you to compile a kernel module ... but in the end it fails because I can't get a proper 32-bit version of dv4l build (it might be possible, but would require building 32-bit versions of all the libs that its needs...), and since it uses LD_PRELOAD, it can't work across different arch's (ia32 vs x64).

I do not have 32 bits libraries installed. This means that I will need to do a lot of additional work to make Skype running (finding how to install 32 bit libraries, what libraries are needed so on).
So far the only one option I found is to ask all friends and colleagues to use ICQ, MSN or other messenger, because others work fine. This is not so easy when you need to convince 100 people. I was moving to Skype and asking others to do so. Now, I regret it.
Is there an easy way to install all 32 bit libraries required by Skype?

Alfas, it's really easy to install Skype on 64-bit, though it requires to use command line. Open your favorite terminal application (for Kubuntu it's konsole), then run following to install Skype dependencies (most likely you already have them on Kubuntu though, but for any case):
sudo aptitude install libqt4-core libqt4-gui
Then install the Skype:
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture <path-to-skype-deb-package>
Of course you'll need to enter your password after first `sudo` command. Hope it helps.

Thanks, I tried it. However, no success. I still can not start Skype. I do not think it got properly installed.
The first command did nothing and the second finished quit fast without any errors. However, if I try to run skype I got error message (I checked file is here and not empty):
/usr/bin$ skype
bash: /usr/bin/skype: No such file or directory
Any ideas?
The output from previous commands is bellow.
/usr/bin$ sudo aptitude install libqt4-core libqt4-gui

Something weird happens on your system since output shows your Skype was installed ok. Oh, one more thing! You should install libraries necessary to run 32 bit binaries on your system:
sudo aptitude install ia32-libs

Thanks it did the trick. Skype is up and running. Thanks a lot.

The only one question, why they do not include this in installation instructions or better in scripts.

I have no answer to this question.

Actually I remembered I saw these instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Skype - this resource has some valuable information.

What about Skype for Linux, 64bit version?
It would be a great application.
Is it possible?

Cimmo,
Would you please provide an update on the status of 'Install Instructions' for 32-bit Skype on a 64-bit Linux system and/or advise as to when we may anticipate the availability of a true 64-bit compile?
Thank you.

A native 64bit version that just works would be great. If you are a user of Debian Linux, then you may be interested at
http://wiki.debian.org/skype for a summary to get regular VoIP to work. Video, as mentioned in this thread already, needs some extra thoughts.

It's live!
http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-ubuntu-amd64Note: this is NOT a 64 build, is just a package that has dependencies set correctly for ubuntu 8.04+ 64 bit, so no adjustment should be done by the user other than install this.

Thank you very much for posting the link. I have been stumbling around looking for some help on this for a while. I'm not new to Ubuntu, but the 64 bit is new to me.
