Full Version: Skype Fedora 9 Mic Problem

Dear skype-users,

for some time now I am using Fedora 9 as my main operating system. Unfortunately, I had to boot into windows for using skype as it wouldn't work correctly. After a failed install of Vista SP1, I can't boot Windows anymore, so I have been trying to get skype to work under Linux.

I could install the rpm without problem and the program starts. (I also tried the statically linked oss version).
I tried adding my account to the pulse-groups and editing /etc/pulse/daemon.conf ( http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=119961&st=20 and links therein) but to no avail.
I tried starting skype (rpm and oss-version) with padsp, pasuspender and without helper-program, with all the audio-in options available.

I can hear people talking and get all the sounds, but it seems my mic doesn't work.

I would be very grateful, if someone has a solution to get it to work.

Thank you very much in advance.

I'm having the same problem with Fedora 9 and the system not picking up sound. It runs as if it's configured correctly, but I just don't hear anything back with the test call. Install was done with the latest rpm from the website (2.0.0.72-fc5.i586.rpm)

I had the same problem, just fixed it today. I had to go back and forth between the PulseAudio Volume Control and the Master Volume Control. The file menu option in the Master Volume Control has an option to switch devices. Go through each one an make sure that the mic is enabled. I found in my case that it was disabled in one of the devices. Make sure that in PulsAudio Volume Control (Applications->Sound & Video->PulseAudio Volume Control) is also enabled in ouput and input devices. Then in the Skype options select audio settings and make sure the mic is attached to the hw setting and not pulseaudio or you'll sound like Darth Vader taking a bath.

Am, that worked. Though I don't think we're using the same desktop. I just went to the xfce4 app finder for the audio control. It also helped that I used the command line for the xfce4 mixer. For whatever reason, the one that sits on the panel acts a little differently. It may be a permissions issue or something. Frustrating. In the end, I'm not really sure what made it work, but here's what I did.

Using your advice, I found the Pulse Audio Volume control through the xfce4-appfinder. I made my USB headset my default device, and made sure nothing was muted (nothing was). Using the command line, I called xfce4-mixer several times and adjusted the volume until it was up and the device was checked. *sigh* cakewalk, eh?

I had a similar problem with CentOS 5 - found the solution reading the pages on

Phenyl,
Start gnome-volume-control application and check if you have selected "Internal mic" as input source. It helped in my case (Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad T61 + Fedora9) - I had there "mic" only.
You can verify than if your mic works well e.g. in gnome-sound-recorder app.

I had a problem with Skype audio output & input on x86_64 arch. Solved output by installing pulseaudio i386 lib (not x86_64). Solved mic problem by going to master volume, clicking on "Switches" tab and selecting Mic Boost +20db.
Hope this helps.
