Actually I can't open links at all...

LinuX M@n1@k, try to set default browser in System/Preferences/Preferred Applications. If it doesn't help, try following command (type in gnome-terminal):
sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
It will show you the list of candidates for web browser role, you'll need to enter number of preferred browser. If you have only one browser installed, nothing will happen.
As for me I have no such environment variable, but links open ok.
