Hi all,

Expat Forums Online is now Skype enabled. The phpbb MOD was put in last night. There's a banner on the bottom of the page saying we are now set up for Skype.

Most of the site members are English speaking expatriates living in continental Europe. We are fairly busy with over 200,000 posts and this is an excellent product for people working and living overseas.

Thanks Skype!

Ghandi

www.expatforums.org

Expat Forums is an non-profit website developed through the hard work of several individuals who, in true cooperation, came together to build a genuine community online. Our intention was to create a place where expats and expat wannabees could come together to share ideas and information, help one another to succeed, and build friendships along the way. Although we are focused on the expatriate community, we are open to everyone. Anyone with an interest in living and working abroad, or simply a lust for travel and new places, will find a home here. We have a number of members who are currently living the dream, as well as many who are not currently working abroad, but intend to someday. There are also others who have since returned home, as well as travellers who are on the road and find this site useful for information on places to visit. Many of us travelled for a while before settling down as expatriates, and some still travel for business. Travel is a recurrent theme around here.

Where We've Been - A Little History

We started off as a group of bulletin board refugees who walked away from a commercial site that clearly did not care about its customers. We endured years of technical problems, annoying popups and animated ads, and poor customer support, and the final straw was an unannounced software "upgrade" which removed many popular features, as well as deleting over 200,000 posts. We decided to take matters into our own hands. A small group of us built this site as a form of protest, in order to lobby to get our old board back, or at least a more functional version of the new board. Although we were unsuccessful in swaying the marketing behemoth, we soon realized that we had built something entirely better. We polled our users for a new name, and one was chosen from among 15 nominations. ExpatForums.org was born! Our community still makes many key decisions via polling and user suggestions, allowing membership input into the growth and direction of the website.

Structure and Rules

Some of the key debates we had as a young community involved freedom of speech, whether or not to use moderators, and how to guarantee an unbiased forum which would would be open to members of all political hues, what kind of rules to have, etc. In the end it was decided that we would have certain areas which would have minimal restrictions, while others would be more carefully monitored. Because our former abode was completely unmonitored, we decided to preserve certain areas of this site as "Free-Speech" zones, where little or no moderation takes place. We became used to it at our old home and still enjoy free expression today. The open areas include Speaker's Corner (the Soapbox), International News, and The Fight Club. You need thick skin to venture into these sections. People can get carried away, so the best rule-of-thumb is simply to ignore that which offends you. The rest of the site adheres firmly to what we call the Letter of the Rules and the Spirit of the Rules (see guidelines thread). These rules are intended to preserve some semblance of order, and offer as little restriction as possible. All of the rules which have been put into place have come about from our experience of how people interrelate in an online community, and all of them have been necessary at one time or another. If you have questions or issues with any of our rules, please tell us. We value your input!

Come Right In, Make Yourself at Home

So if you are lurking in the background, please sign up and come on in. You will need to register with a valid email address, because you will receive a confirmation link for validation. Your information will always remain private, unless you choose to disclose it. If you are new around here, head for the introduction thread and tell us who you are. Thanks to all those that helped make this site the place it is including dreamportal, gadreel, muppetmaster, bobgiblet, and rorschach in particular. And thanks to the many who continue to donate to help keep the site running.

Cheers and welcome,
The ExpatForums Community

We are still testing and ironing out a few bugs but Radio Expat will have the capacity to do talk radio using Skype and Peercast p2p streaming technology to stream music (and eventually video).

Expatriates (our demographic) are mobile, away from home, IT saavy, and Skype is a very useful tool for communications.

Neowin, a large technology news site and community forum, has added both a Skype profile option and a [skype] BBCode tag to its features.

We just added it and Skype links are rapidly being seen in profile entries.

----

On another note:

I've made a simple callto:// link for forums that do not support Skype links as an option.

http://skype.nwserver.net/YourSkypeName

This link works exactly like a callto:// link. I use it on a few forums I frequent that do not have a Skype area for me to enter my Skype username.

Please post here links to your Skype enabled projects - sites, forums - whatever. It is intresting how you implement new ideas. To share new decisions. How many such projects are out there?

With the latest version of Skype it is very easy to start moderator-chat and problem-chat -- as a result - much less flood and rubbish on community boards! Skype - thanks again. bigsmile.png

PS - my link is in my signature.

Big5.com is a Skype Enbaled Search Agent!

It does collective search on keyword entered by users, and presents result pages via an embedded Navi bar. (beta and proof-of-concept so far)

Smart skypers can register keywords to place ads with the site, for free!

BTW, the site is co-branded with both SmartSkyper.com and Big5.com.

Those being admin of a vbulletin forum, there is a (pretty short) explanation of how to add a skype status icon.
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?&t=64563
I found it more convenient to show the status icon directly instead of just a skypeme image, as vbulletin does it with ICQ, MSN etc.
Just change in the code given there the image location to:
CODE

Just started collecting info on software add-ons, hardware and other Skype-theme info portals. This will not be a blog or a journal site, but rather a quick reference.

We have ability to embed syndicated RSS feeds into our site, so if you have any information available in RSS, we can show it on SkypeToolkit.com.... More links to your site will give you higher ranking on Google so link up, its free.

We did a RSS pull test from forum.skype.com and it works great. bigsmile.png

Best Web Accessible, Human Editted Business and Home Skype Directory

Check out this cool site I came across http://skype-directory.com. It's a human editted web accessible global skype directory. For free you can add yourself or your business to the listings!

English Roleplay is a free, Skype enabled English speaking community where language learners practice with each other and with teachers using interactive roleplays, discussions and freetalk.

We have a new, free API for English teachers where learners can buy lessons from teachers. Teachers choose their own prices and display their qualifications and experience.

During 2007 we plan to release a free API for writers of learning content, with a shared revenue model, and launch communities for learning other languages such as Mandarin, Spanish and Hindi.

Welcome to our first site:

(What other Skype sites are available in Thai, Vietnamese or Hindi??) Users can add listings, categories and it appears to be very large and quite popular World Wide, growing by hundreds of entries a month.

Hi,

englishroleplay
Hello,

English Roleplay is a Skype enabled language learning community, where
students practice speaking English with each other and with teachers.

English teachers can now rent a "Roleplay Classroom" and set their own
tuition fees. Teachers personalize their Classroom with their teaching
specialty and learning tips. The concept is similar to offline ESL classrooms,
where teachers co-ordinate student-to-student activities, make suggestions
and correct grammar and pronunciation errors.

Welcome ESL teachers to the site:
