Hi,

I'm having problems with Skype in Ubuntu. I install it correctly, but when I'm gonna login, it can't connect and says me that I could have other instance open (or something similar, I have it in spanish).

Anyones can help me?

Thx!

Hello,

I've got the same Problem. In Germen it is: "Möglicherweise läuft bereits eine weitere Skype-Instanz" In english it should be like: "Possably there is another instance of Skype".

My sistem is an Toshiba Portegere M 100 with Kubuntu 8.04.

Thx

this means that skype is automatically running when you start your machine. try restarting / rebooting your machine, and if that does not work, try the following commands in a terminal / konsole:

dave@dave-ubuntu-laptop:~$ ps ax |grep sky

you should get something like:

8361 ? Sl 0:01 skype
8372 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep sky

on the left you see a number, obviously the top left, pertaining to the process skype, 8361. try the next commmand:

dave@dave-ubuntu-laptop:~$ kill 8361

dave@dave-ubuntu-laptop:~$ ps ax |grep sky

output should be:

8655 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep sky

Now try starting skype! Should work..

Same problem here, with Ubuntu 8.04

Seems that skype hides itsefl after you close skype window, this is somekind bug.
Normally it only minimizes main skype window to Panel bar.. but now it totally disappears and you can see skype process only via ps-command or system monitor.. and seems that there is no way to restore hidden skype main window, only kill it. sadsmile.png

Problem seems same with skype 1.4 and 2.0.0.43

..and now it's fixed/solved.

Someone has removed from panel bar Notification area applet, where that Skype icon should appear after skype is started.
Just add 'Notification area' applet and it works again. bigsmile.png

Dear friends

I learned another pssobility how the problem mentioned above could happen:

My hard disk broke, well, I put a new one in my Computer, installed the operating system. As usual, I copied the backed-up files into my new home-folder. This contained from the old data the folder .Skype which contained my username and the password. So, the newly installed Spype-program read these data and thought thereby, Skype is already running.

However, if you ever install your system newly and copy your home-data in your folder, never forget to delete the .Skype folder or, in advance, avoid copying it.This attaches all OS.

Keep having fun with Skype,

OK, here the problem and likely solution:

I suffered from the same problem. I realised I was missing my green skype check-mark in the right-top notification area. Clicking on the blue skype icon just attempted to start it skype again.

Solution:
right click on an empty area in your notification area (top-right bar by the clock) and select "Add to Panel" now scroll down and find "Notification area" then OK.

you should be able to see the green >>running<< skype instance along with all non running duplicates. Right click and close the duplicates.
You can now close the main skype window with the "X" and bring it to the foreground again with the green notifier.

Hi,
I just got Skype on Ubuntu, and for some reason when I go to make a call it says in the call box " Problem with Audio Playback"
I don't what's wrong, please help,
Thanks :)

I received the same error but changed the settings in "Options" to the word Pulse. This eliminated the error message but I still cannot make a successful call. My microphone is not functioning. The settings do not seem to work. I am using Ubuntu version 9.04.

Hey skype,
I've had Ubuntu 8.04/8.10/... on my same IBM Thinkpad T-40 notebook with skype for years and never had these problems, or skype configuration/settings "errors" before -it just mainly worked.

But Ubuntu 9.04 and (latest) skype, be it from here or mediubuntu apt-gets it's just plain CRAP !!!!
whats goin' on with skype?, one day its ALSA, next day its... oh please tryin' change all audio settings in skype to "PULSE" ?
-still the Mic doesn't work or there is no sound at all!, with I/O errors galore.
Yet everything else sound wise from audio CD's to watchin my favourite movie is fine!

comon skype fix this up will ya ?!!! Pay a little more "ATTENTION" to the paying Linux usere out here. -u lazzzzeee slobs!

Most of us are "paying" for skype. What are we paying for ?!!!!

EKIGA ! and just using an opensource SIP and it works, I hope Ekiga will just replace this proprietary piece of crap-skype !.

well installed crunchbang 9.04 distro instead-(basically its just a slimmed down version of Ubuntu 9.04), ran all the updates,
...went into Volume Control -> enabled the Mic and Skype(same latest version) works great ?!!!

so what gives with Ubuntu 9.04, configs?, alsa?, pulse?, whatever.
RickN
Finally fixed this (but beware):

I tried getting (latest)skype and "Ubuntu 9.04/i386" and all this "pulse" crap to work but I still had no Mic.

But This quick and dirty DID WORK:
# sudo aptitude search "pulse"
# sudo aptitude purge "pulse"
(remove all the "pulse" driver packages, ...)
# sudo reboot
# In Ubuntu 9.04 -> Sound Properties -> Volume Control
-> enable Mic and adjust vol. accordingly.

(if skype is already installed just "reset" all the audio crap in skype's options back to "autoselect/defaults...", and/or alsa)
or,
# sudo aptitude install skype

Thats it. Skype works perfectly.
------------------------------------------

you could probably leave the "libpulse0", "gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio", ... client packages and skype will still work. -not sure ?

But note !, obvisouly if you use pulse (as a server,...) extensively then don't remove those.
-For me I don't give a crap !, alsa, oss, ... are more than good enough for me and I need skype.
err atleast until EKIGA get's more popular than skype -now that would be good.

I have the same problem. And in addition, I'm a complete newbie to ubuntu and don;t know whether my system uses pulse or not! So RickN can you tell me what type of packages might use "pulse" and how to find out if it is involved with anything on my system.

Thanks

I got solve the issue after mess around so i'm not sure what was the key step to get this sorted anway after remove the pulse as explained above i set this configuration, in skype ->options->sound devices i select all default device, removed the option "allow skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels, then in ubuntu 9.04 system->preference-> sound all autodetect a part from "sound cuptre" where i put hda intel ad198x analog (alsa) and in default mixer tracks "analog devices ad1983 (oss mixer) (i'm using a headphone with microphone plugged in the green and pink connector and not an usb headphone. Then in volume control (in this version of ubuntu you get by clicking on volume icon on the top left corner, and then "volume control") for the device "analog devices ad1983(oss mixer)" in th tab payback i enabled all at maximum level,in tab recording i enabled microphone at maximum level. Then for the device "HDA intel (alsa mixer)" in tab playback all enabled at maximum level, tab switches untick option "line-in Capture" and finally skype microphone was working! smile.png I'm not an expert in linux so as i wrote i dont know what really did the trick and what of modification i did were unnecessary

I just had the same problem with Ubuntu Desktop (latest version - Sept 2009)

I fixed the problem by openening up a terminal window using Application -> Accessories -> Terminal. Then type the following (you should be able to copy and paste the text into the terminal window):

name=` who am i | cut -d' ' -f1 `
chown -R $name:$name .Skype
killall skype
exit

Then restart your skype instance. That should fix the "other skype application running" error.

- good luck
