Full Version: Installation problem with Mandrake 9.2

Hi,

I'm struggling to install Skype on my PC. I have Mandrake 9.2. The problem is obviously qt3.
I tried several solutions:
1) install the "RPM for systems with Qt 3.1 ". But it does not work, the installation fails (message: "qt3[>= 3.1] non satisfait"). I don't know anything about qt3, but I know that I have "qt3 Designer" already installed on my machine. Thus I don't understand the error message.
2) install the version with Qt 3.2 compiled in. Then the installation goes through successfully, but when I try to open Skype, 2 blank windows pop up with almost nothing inside.

If anyone knows a solution (understandable to someone who is a beginner with Linux), thanks in advance...

To get Skype working with dynamic QT, you need to have minimum version of QT installed (as you have QT designer installed, you have QT installed as well, but maybe not the right version) In QT Designer, check the version of QT (Help -> About QT)

Why Skype starts-up with nearly blank dialogs is another question, that could be related to some settings on your system (colors for text/background a others).

Hi
it looks like I have a similar problem too and am now confused by the answer.
As I have SuSE Linux 8.2 I installed the linux release with "Qt 3.2 compiled in".
However, my windows are practically empty (just frames and some checkboxes but no text). I'm guessing its some setting within Qt or fonts or colours. What I don't understand from a previous answer is how this can be that I have to install Qt in a newer version - the Qt is compiled in or? I assume this to mean that the libs are statically linked and so what Qt is on my PC is irrelevant. Or am I missing something???
I would think it would have something to do with some .qtprofile or the like - is there such a file and if so what do I need to enter.

Cheers,
andE

If you use the "static" version of Skype, which has QT compiled in, then you will not need any QT installed on your system, and if one is installed it should get ignored.

For your fonts problem, I suggest that you try running Skype when there is not ~/.qt directory (move it away for testing, or delete it after having done a backup of it).

Just heavily resizing the window of Skype might help too, but not sure. Does Skype output anything to console, as if there are font issues, QT built in Skype will probably complain on console...

I cannot make skype (skype_staticQT-1.0.0.1.tar.bz2) work on knoppix (KNOPPIX_V3.7-2004-12-08-EN.iso), it has the same blank page opening problem as others have noticed.

More exactly: The skype window opens with no fonts displayed at all. The menus work (I know where to click). The main window is at least 3 screens wide.

My observations:

1. for being static, this version of skype is linked against a dozen of libraries. Maybe that is not so good.

2. it also has the choppy (hacked) sound problem when run under Debian/unstable (or older Knoppix).

3. Why is it so hard to make skype work with the default settings of the oss sound system that exists in most linux distros ?

If anyone has a solution for the knoppix problem above, please advise. thanks.
