hey
i use a lot the instant message feature as a work tool. English is not my mother tongue, but since i m working a lot with English native speaking i have to write in english. i have many time silly spelling mistakes, which are very embarrassing. hence, i wonder whether it is possible to add spell check to the instant message feature.

Hey Dory!

I dream of the day!!!!

And English is my only tongue!

You are lucky. Me, I am not!

I guess it would be possible, but very much work!
What I would suggest, isthat you have a own "IM"-editor with spelling-check that sends the IMs through the Skype API. (did not yet fully check the API capabilities, so fix me if Sending IMs is not possible with API!)

I feel that Skype IM functionality is a bit neglected. It's there but they don't expect many people to use it. That would change if they implemented SMS sending in the IM (for a fee, of course).

They could use Aspell (http://aspell.sourceforge.net), Gaim uses it and it is free. Can be used as library or standalone. It's licensed both under GNU Free Documentation License and LGPL.

In alternative they could use OpenOffice.org dictionaries (Aspell's, as well), licensing terms permitting. This would at least spare them the effort to build them.

You can always write your message in an app that supports spell checking and just paste it in Skype.

I agree, but I think there are other things more important than IM-fine-tuning that need to be done (payment problems, various bugs, audio issues mainly on Linux+Alsa/sound daemon, maybe webcam)

Good news for Skype is that we care.

Why do we care, when there are so many solutions out there?

We care because we like Skype, and want it to be an all encompassing application satisfying all our communication needs. It already provides excellent voice communication, connectivity to legycy systems (SkypeOut, and soon SkypeIn), decent IM with room for improvement, soon hopefully video as well. Add to that SMS sending and faxing through SkypeOut and you no longer need to run multiple applications. It has very strong foundation to build on.

Should everybody use Skype? Heavens no! That's why Skype should support standards wherever possible. I'm talking about SIP, about allowing through API(if it's not the case already) to build support for other IM platforms...

4 years later and still no spelling check????

I really could use a spell checker too. It's common in almost all programs these days to get the little red squiggly line under a word when it's misspelled. Skype chat is the only program I use on a daily basis which doesn't have it. (I use Skype chat a lot more then Skype voice)

I am running linux and the best solution I can find to having good spell check is to run skype through pidgin using skype for pidgin. http://code.google.com/p/skype4pidgin/ Its not the best choice but I use pidgin already so its not much work for me.

Doesn't every thing have spell check?!? I'm pretty sure it's a very standard feature in all programs! This really really frustrates me.
