Full Version: Sound not working when starting a call

I get the famous "Problem with Audio Playback" error when starting a test call. However, I can use the button "Make a test sound" in the options to play some Skype sound. Furthermore, I can initiate the call, while this test sound is running, it gives me the sounds for but this time I get the error "Problem with Audio Capture".

But I found even more interesting stuff: If I go to the options and click the "Test Event" button while "Skype Login" or "Skype Logout" is selected, nothing happens. The second click gives me the expected behaviour though. Furthermore, if I select something else, say "Call on Hold" for example, there is no sound, no matter how often I click the "Test Event" button. But the next time I test the login or logout event, I get both sounds at once: the sound for the login/logout and the one for the other event I last tested.

I just noticed, that the sound for "Call Failed" is mixed into the normal sound test (the one performed with the button "Make a test sound"). Probably the former sound is triggered through the broken call where I got the message "Problem with Audio Playback".

I attached the logs for a Skype session, where I made a call (and got the "Problem with Audio Playback" error), played the test sound, made another call and received the "Problem with Audio Capture" error.

Skype Version is 2.0.0.63
OS is Gentoo
No Desktop environment in use (i.e. no sound daemons in my process table)

I have the exact same issue here. Running amd64 Gentoo as well. The sounds seem to get queued up and only play when certain other sounds are played.

I'm not running a DE either, just the simple OpenBox WM. No sound daemons or the like.

I can play multiple sounds simultaneously without issue using other apps.

Still looking through the forums for a possible solution.

Thanks

me, three, and same setup. gentoo amd64. the system previously worked. sound still works fine on every other application afaik. plus, even skype 2.0.0.68 can play its test sound just fine, but it declares "Problem with Audio Playback" whenever I want to call someone.

--- are the skype developers reading this? would it be possible to give a more informative error message, that could help us figure out what the problem is?

Well if i get a sound to play when testing and then immediately place a call to echo123 or whatever it is, i can make the test call. Then i can't make the test call again unless i do the same thing. Rather annoying. I sure hope the skype devs do read these forums and look into fixing this. Skype is rather useless for me at this point.

Well, I fired up skype and made 4 or 5 almost successful test calls in a row. No problem with the utterly useless "Problem with audio playback" "error message"

The only problem being, my mic was not working. I'm using the mic built into my quickcam 4000. I checked lsmod and sure enough, snd_usb_lib and snd_usb_audio were not loaded. I modprobe'd both and made a single successful test call, even recording my voice worked.

I tried to place another test call and I got the "error message" again. Same still holds true in that if i go into option and click the button for a test sound, I can then place a test call. If I don't it's nothing but the error message.

Is anyone else using a usb mic? Maybe that's part of the issue?

I'm using an Audigy2 ZS for a sound card with alsa btw.

Hopefully this gets fixed someday.

i was hoping someone would have a solution for this. Would be nice to see some more activity on the skype for Linux front.
