Full Version: Skype on AMD64?

Hi,

Just built a new Ubuntu box on AMD Athlon 64 bit.

Anyone know if a repository exists, so that I can add this to my /etc/apt/sources.list?

If not, is there a download that is specifically for AMD64, or will the 32-bit version work?

Appreciate your help.

Chris.

Ok, no replies to this topic of mine. I am now Skype'less. Is there anyway to run Skype stable or beta on a 64 bit box, without using additional software to emulate 32-bit or whatever. I'm not remotely interested in performance gains of a 64 bit Skype client, I just want it to work.

Can anyone help....please?

Thanks,

Chris.

apt-get install ia32-libs
get static qt skype and run it.

should work with reasonable recent ia32-libs.

Success! Thanks very much. Looking forward to a native 64-bit client, though.

Cheers,

Chris.

I can't understand why they don't just compile it in a 64bit machine and release it.
Qt works under 64bit and I would guess they should have much code dependent on 64bit so the reason why they don't release a native client is a mystery to me.

Someone explained on here somewhere before why just compiling Skype on a 64bit OS wouldn't work. I can't remember the exact reasons, but it was something quite fundamental.

Anyone know where a Skype repository for debian is? I'm using AMD64, but after installing some libs, seem to be able to use 32-bit.

Cheers,

Chris.

You can do this with the normal debs on amd64:

CODE

sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture skype-debian_2.0.0.68-1_i386.deb

However fundamental could it be, still - native 64-bit version of Skype for Linux is badly needed, even without video. In a couple of years Linux will be the more and more 64-bit.

... writing from a laptop with 2 Gb RAM and 64-bit Linux; my desktop is 4 Gb and 64 bit as well.
