Full Version: Pornography, Sex Acts and Racist Recruiting in Skype Live Chat Areas

lipssealed.png I'd like to know if anyone else has been over the Skype "Live" area recently. I popped over there tonight to see if there was a technical group I could participate in. Instead, I saw group after group advertising "young" "lonely" girls/women seeking "horny" "hot" men and a group that said "God hates Nigg3rs". There were photos of people engaged in sex acts as the group chat photo.

I've been using and paying for Skype for just over two years. I've made it my primary business number but what I saw tonight has left me disgusted and embarrassed to be using the service. What if my clients decided to try Skype and saw these things?

I read over the Skype TOS and they said they don't moderate the groups, why not?

I certainly wouldn't buy a cell phone if their site had pornography on it. I wouldn't buy groceries at a store that had "hustler" at the checkout.

Really, I had no idea of the chat group conditions. It is certainly doable to filter those types of adult items to a seperate category and not allow them to be "Featured Chats"

...yuck

What I sent to Skype
----------------------------------

Skype,

I haven't been over to the live chat area in a while. Tonight I went and was embarrassed and horrifed at the content I saw. Completely naked women, people engaged in sex acts and a group saying "God hates Nigg3rs".

I have been paying for Skype for over 2 years now. This stuff isn't business appropriate and I'm glad I've never offered to give a tour of Skype to any of my clients.

Many of these groups violate your policy

I may consider moving to another voip provider if this sort of inappropriate material is not filtered out for the main Skype area

Hi Aden,

Thank you for your post.

If your are using the Business version of Skype, found on www.skype.biz, the Live Tab is deactivated and thus not shown.

I will pass on your feedback regarding what content is shown in the Live tab in the regular version of Skype.

Kind regards,

Wilhelm

Can you turn off Skype chat ,I am set to only allow chat from contacts thats all i could find but we do not use chat we use the skype through our window server to a skype phone adapter ,but tired of clicking decline 20 request for talk from naked women every day ,we just use as a phone system but you go to the main PC that skype is on and have to go through that every day ,is there something i am missing to have skype chat not even be an option at all on here and just use it as a phone service for our business ,really tired of the request for chat ,I would set to un avaiable but then non of the customers would probably call thinking were off line devil.png

Still going through plies of chat request on the chat part, there has got to be a way somehow to turn off chat and just leave the phone service ,tired still of getting 20 request for chat an hour from pictures of naked women ,on out business phone service

I see where someone earlier said they would report ,would the regular version allow to shut off chat ,than the business version ?

I guess the chat might be a nice application for some but if your using it on a completly different PC on a server for the business phone chat really is something don't care to have on,expecially when you get request to add these people half naked to your list ,since we just use as a phone would be nice to have the feature be able to turn off, does come in handy if on the road between sales men to chat with each other ,but most of them have a skype phone to use on ther laptop so somthing needs to be done to either filter the chat ,or turn it off, some new clients might use it with us but we just don't like the porn ,having to decline them joining our list of people that is OKed to use ,to the tune of 15 to 20 an hour ,tooke me 30 minutes the other day to decline all the request on the main PC

for chat we use a different messanger system any way with our customers ,because some of the others have so many more options ,so we just use Skype as a phone service ,but no way to turn off chat and that would be nice to turn that off,if we turn anything off like wee on line then the customers don't think were there to call or it says we arn't there needs like a not avaiable for chat or a turn off chat completly ,expecially on the business edition

Like on eBay who owns Skype at least on there pages you have a choice to mark call me or call me or chat me ,we never mark chat me it just call me in there options ,that way we can get a call but don't worry about the chat part they have a question they can use the email me the question and use one of our other chat services ,but lets turn off the chat some how on Skype somebody that way we don't get all the chat request from porn

Unfortunetely, even though I don't care for these groups. They do have a right. It falls under free speech. You have every right not to go into them.Like mxit in this country, skype offers a service, the way people use/abuse it is entirely up to them. If you start emplying controls on these groups, where do you stop? And you know just how petty people can get. This is the third time that I've seen people complain about the group "I hate niggers" but the group "Why I hate whites" on facebook seems to be okay.

Unfortunetely these types of groups will always be around....

hello

One of the problems with these spammers and time wasters annoying normal people using Skype for business, or personal users not wanting to be a time waster, is that the spammers are mostly unidentified, using false details and possibly use multiple accounts (which makes me think how many of the 500 million Skype users are real!)

One suggestion to Skype Staff that comes to my mind about controlling this problem, is to offer a feature for Skype users to be in contact with ONLY Skype users who have paid credit into their Skype Account.

So, if I select in my "Options" to allow only Skype contacts with credit in their accounts, then I am most likely to be contacted only by Skype users who have identified themselves to Skype.

If there are some friends or business users who do not have credit in their Skype accounts, then they can still be added manually if the email me their Skype Username.

I am thinking about how mobile phone providers use two main methods of payments. One is paid accounts and the other is Prepaid (PAYG). The Prepaid mobile users do not show ID to the phone company, while the paid account mobile users do show ID.

Maybe Skype could introduce an "Option' for Skype credited account users to select, so that only identified credit account users are able to contact me if I select that option?

Any better ideas, please add them.

Steve
