Full Version: Skype Toolbar Firefox PC and Firefox Mac - Problems
Skype Community > English > Products > Toolbars
Zatiro
Alright, let's see if someone can help resolve it:

I have two computers, a pc and mac. I just installed the latest skype versions for each OS:
3.6.0.248 for win xp
2.7.0.257 for mac OS X

I use Firefox in both computers/OS.

The Skype toolbar (which shows and works on IE on my pc) doesn't show or work on either Firefox, whether is win or mac.

How can resolve this? I use that toolbar to call numbers directly from my browser and I will not use IE any longer.

Thanks, Z.

Hi Zatiro,
I apologize for the trouble and appreciate that you chose to report it.
To get the Skype extension for Firefox you need to download the Skype installer (again) and run it. In the first screen you will see an button (in the lower left corner) saying Options. That will allow you to select which add-ons are installed with Skype.

Regretfully the Skype extension for Firefox only works on Windows.

Does anyone know when/if the extension will become available for Firefox, Safari or Flock? The extension is an absolute necessity.

Hi Zarasa,
I am delighted you like the Skype web add-on! Regretfully we do not yet supply an add-on for Safari or Flock, but one i available on Firefox. Regretfully only on Windows, though!

Peter Kalmström
Hi Matt,
I can't really comment on future products but we appreciate your interest!
Zarasa
It would be very useful to your Customers if your product development people can comment regarding future availability of this extension for Mac users (either Firefox or Safari would be fine). The extension is a very important product feature that you have left off for Mac users.
Peter Kalmström
Hi Zarasa,
In general we do not comment on future releases or features but we do appreciate your input.

Hi Peter:
Just a note to say thanks for your attention to this matter.
Mac enthusiasts love extensions, especially those for such useful functions as Skype provides. Also, Firefox is the coolness, and all we true geeks love it.

* ;D *

Seriously, though.
I use my Skype-in number for my business and the Firefox extension is something I desperately miss now that I have moved my work to a new iMac.

Please, if you would, add my name to the list of of those requesting a Firefox extension for Skype, for the Mac...

Oh. And see WALL-E... It's a must. Mac lovers get tears.

Thanks!

So what is considered not "general"? Or is that just pc talk?

I have paid for the international package and pay Skype on an ongoing basis as my home country is not yet on your international list. I am also a Mac user and would like to know your future plans on the plugin/Firefox situation so that I can make an informed decision on purchasing a PC as I depend on Skype heavily.
We are not asking for intimate details. Just if development in that direction is on the table or not.

So could you expound on your definition of "general" please?

I just wanted to add another voice to those saying that a Firefox plugin for Mac would be very useful! I've never visited these forums before as Skype Just Works ™ for me, but today I decided to spend some time researching a Firefox/Skype add-on as it would be so useful.

Anyway, thanks. I'm sure there's somebody in the Mac/Firefox community who knows how to write this extension-- it's just not me. Rather than the way it seems the IE/Windows one works, I could imagine that it would be better to be able to highlight a phone number and right-click to call (rather like the 'Search with Google' functionality in the right-click menu), but however it works I look forward to this extension.

I have an extension in FX bearing the Skype logo and the name "Skype extension for Firefox", version 2.2.0.87, installed at 09:14;24 on June 24 2008, GUID {B13721C7-F507-4982-B2E5-502A71474FED} I think the Skype install put it there.

My question is simple - what does it do

Its does not appear to be a toolbar, other posts indicate that might be it's raison d'etre - its not in my list of tool bars, the Options button is disabled, it doesn't seem to make its presence felt in any menu, nor in the status bar or in the customise buttons.

I am going to uninstall it, is there an option in the install/upgrade to prevent its installation in future. Why don't you put it on Moz, I Googled for it, all I got to see were complaints that it interferes with Google Earth - I don't have that problem. I searched for it in Skype, thats how I ended up here I don't have any problem with it, for it seems to be totally moribund, the ultimate in waste of space extension.

What I want is something like what the also moribund Skype Sidebar Extension promised to be - then I'd be a happy vegemite.
Peter Kalmström
Hi Urbane Tiger,
This is slightly off topic since it is mostly for people on Macs who want the toolbar. Regretfully we don't supply them one, yet.

On Windows we do and that is the one you have found. It gets installed by default if you don't go into Options in the first installer screen to de-select it. If it is installed there is a final installation wizard page that describes that the extension has indeed been installed.

Once installed what the extension does is recognize phone numbers on web-pages. It renders them like a button so it is easy to call that phone number by simply clicking it.

You can learn more about the Skype Toolbars, what they do and how they work by viewing the screencast linked in my profile below!

Please let me know if you have any further questions!

I love SKYPE and use it for my business. I was saddened to see that the SKYPE button to dial a number in the firefox browser was only for windows....when will this be added to MAC.....There are sooo many cool feature for skype that are limited to the windows environment. I am trying to get my colleagues to switch to Mac computers but it will be a shame to loose all the neat features that you have for windows.

Can you please let me know when this will change. At least then I will know that there is light at the end of the tunnel

I would like also to have the FireFox extension for Skype to work on Mac... I would also like Skype on my iPhone...

Thanks

Any chance this might happen soon?

We would love an extension for Mac. Until Skype creates one, this works...

I would like to add my support for the development of a Firefox plugin that will work for Mac!

In the meantime, Mac users can use this script:

You have to have the Greasemonkey addon installed and enabled first.

Hi Matt,
I can't really comment on future products but we appreciate your interest!

Why can't you comment? It would seem that from the number of Mac Users asking for this extension to be released on OS X that it would be in your company's best interest to do so.

Please let us know if Skype plans on releasing a Mac version - as I would prefer not to have to install the script and run another piece of software just to get something working that PC users get when they install Skype...

If you want to run a good company you have to address the Mac world - it's so 1990's to only make stuff for PC.

Frustratedly yours,

Ditto... plug in for Safari or Firefox for Mac please.

Thanks!

I would like to add my voice to the many Mac Users missing this fantastic extension. HURRY UP AND GET IT DONE PLEASE!

Ditto. I'm anxiously awaiting the Skype add-on for Firefox on Mac OS X (Intel processor). Thanks.

I just signed up for the forums for the expressed purpose of saying this:

Mac & linux users want web browser plug-ins!

I just switched over to a Mac and miss the Firefox integration. It can't be THAT difficult to port the scripting over from Windows versions of Firefox.

C'mon, the writing's on the wall. Microsoft's a sitting duck and hasn't had a good-selling product since Office 2003, 6 years ago...
pcmacguy
Ditto... We need a way to click phone numbers in our safari browser... I like SAFARI & I love SKYPE... don't make me use "foxfon"... I HATE FOXFON!
beanqsagof
i also would like a mac skype extension for firefox... i don't know about forum posts but i do know that for every consumer phone call made to request something from a company is worth 500 people requesting that same thing due to the fact that most people just don't pick up the phone... if a forum is worth anything like that, then you've got around 10,000 people clamoring for a skype extension for mac... maybe that's not a lot... i don't know.

It's clear that the Skype developers do not care about the Mac community and don't deserve their business to be honest. In this day and age, with so many (and growing number) of Mac users, where VOIP choices abound, it is unfathomable and inexcusable for a company to ignore a big segment of their customer base. In this economy, I believe companies fighting to survive need to be as responsive as possible; those that do not deserve to fall under and let the stronger ones survive.

That's my two cents. I will be switching to one of the many VoIP choices as the continued request for Mac plug-ins is continually ignored.

I hope the rest of you follow suit.

Please Please get the button added to Safari and Firefox for Mac. It is an important part of skype that shouldn't be kept from the macusers. The number of Mac users are growing at twice the rate that pc users are growing. Any time you go to an apple store around the world, it is packed with people purchasing Macs. Thanks for at least the beta mac update. It gives us hope.
Peter Kalmström
Hi all,
I am happy to announce that we have now finally taken some substantial steps towards providing toolbars for Mac. PNR, the shared component that actually finds phone numbers on web pages, is now cross platform. That doesn't mean everything is ready to go, but I can assure you we do care and will continue to work on this.
Can't make any promised release dates yet, though!
ThomasFL
Any idea if it will only work with Firefox, or Safari also? smile.png We are anxiously awaiting this capability...

Any updates on an ETA for a Mac Firefox extension?? Sign me up to beta test, please! I needed it yesterday... sadsmile.png

No ETA yet, but I promise this place will be the first to find out.
I appreciate your enthusiasm, it is much appreciated!

Hi there:
Yes Skype Toolbar for Firefox for the Mac would hit several sweet spots at once, if you know what I mean.
Mac users = cool
Firefox users = cool
Skype users = cool.
Please bundle the above.

I've been looking for this and came upon http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Internet-Util...b-Toolbar.shtml over at softpedia. It's not compatible with FF3, so I didn't bother installing it, but after reading the posts on here I'm not sure that's even a legit version.

Totally looking forward to seeing this come to the Mac! smile.png
Peter Kalmström
Hi Zatiro,
I am glad you are using the toolbars to call numbers directly from your browser - that is what they are for :-)

To answer your questions:
  1. The latest version of Skype for Windows is 4.1 - you can download it from www.skype.com
  2. The latest version for Mac is 2.8, but it does not yet include a toolbar for Firefox
  3. On windows the toolbar will be installed for your default browser only. If your default browser is IE then it will only be installed for IE (not for FF). Please look at this short video to learn how to make sure you get the FF extension.
MacUserDonB
Peter,

Has there been an update to the Skype / Firefox / Mac OS issue?
